About 50 people were evacuated from a Sengkang condominium after a fire broke out on Thursday night (Oct 8).

A video of the incident was posted on TikTok by user CuriouslyCarla, where flames could be seen burning inside the third-floor unit, with the fire appearing to engulf items in the living room.

Towards the end of the video, the fire appears to have been extinguished.

In the caption, the TikTok user said they initially thought the fire alarm was another false alarm after hearing it go off three times.

However, they realised something was amiss after their housemate knocked on their door and they noticed smoke.

"Definitely a reminder that alarms are there for a reason," the user said.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told AsiaOne it was alerted to the fire at Block 66 Sengkang Square at about 8.10pm.

This is the address of La Fiesta condo.

The fire involved the contents of the unit's living room and was extinguished by SCDF using a water jet and a hosereel.

About 50 people from the affected block were evacuated by the police and SCDF as a precautionary measure. No injuries were reported.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire was likely caused by an electrical source in the living room.

Following the incident, SCDF reminded the public to take precautions to prevent electrical fires.

These include avoiding overloading electrical outlets, switching off appliances when they are not in use and regularly checking wires for damage.

Frayed wires and cracked cords should be repaired or replaced immediately. Wires should also be kept away from hot surfaces and should not be run under carpets or mats.

SCDF also advised the public to use only appliances and electrical plugs bearing the Safety Mark.

In addition, people should avoid leaving batteries or devices charging unattended for extended periods or overnight.
