THE film Dangerous Minds , released in 1995, introduced audiences to a classroom of young people navigating poverty, difficult relationships, troubled neighbourhoods and violence.

It left an impression on me not merely because of the unconventional teacher, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, but because it reflected how readily society associates troubled adolescents with the circumstances in which they grow up.
