The Malaysian government has announced a new RM50 monthly MyKomuter50 pass for KTM Komuter services, launching between December 1 and January 1, to provide significant travel cost savings.

The pass will allow Malaysian citizens unlimited travel on KTM Komuter for 30 days, addressing public demand for a KTM equivalent to Prasarana's My50 pass.

The initiative aims to alleviate commuting costs, with significant savings for long-distance travelers, and is expected to benefit around 40,000 users.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke also announced plans for service upgrades, including new train sets and increased frequency, to address current operational challenges.

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 12 — Malaysian commuters can expect significant savings in travel costs through the new RM50 monthly MyKomuter50 pass for KTM Komuter services set for launch between December 1 and the new year.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed today that the pass will grant Malaysian citizens unlimited journeys on KTM Komuter for 30 days. While the ministry is pushing for a Dec 1 start, Jan 1 remains the final deadline to ensure all technical preparations are seamless.

“We are targeting a launch as early as December 1 or, at the latest, January 1 next year. If it is not ready by December 1, we will launch it on January 1,” Loke told a press conference at the Transport Ministry.

The initiative is in response to widespread public demand for a KTM equivalent to Prasarana’s My50 pass, Loke explained today.

Implementation was previously hindered by the longer distances and higher fare structures of the KTM network, but the project is now moving forward following approval from the Finance Ministry.

For commuters, the application process will be straightforward: only a MyKad is required to qualify.

“Applicants must be Malaysian citizens. That is it, really,” Loke said.

“KTMB is currently working on the mechanism for implementing the pass. I am pushing for it to be introduced as early as December 1.”

To keep the experience frictionless, the minister said that the government wants to avoid tedious registration processes.

Loke said discussions over the ticketing system is ongoing with KTMB, adding that a digital option would be preferred.

The minister said that the pass is “very value for money” and will directly lower the cost of living for those with long commutes.

The savings are significant: commuters travelling between Tanjung Malim and Kuala Lumpur could save RM366 a month, reducing a typical 40-journey cost from RM416 to just RM50.

Similarly, those travelling between Alor Setar and Butterworth could save up to RM250 monthly, while users of the KTM Shuttle Selatan between Kluang and Johor Bahru could save over RM200. Commuters from Seremban to Kuala Lumpur stand to save at least RM300 a month.

First announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during last Friday’s Budget 2027 tabling, the pass is expected to benefit roughly 40,000 users.

Beyond pricing, Loke addressed ongoing frustrations regarding train frequency and long wait times, pledging a gradual service upgrade throughout next year.

Twelve new train sets are expected to enter service as early as February for the northern sector, covering routes from Ipoh to Butterworth and Butterworth to Padang Besar.

In the Klang Valley, frequency will increase incrementally as track upgrading works conclude and sections of the line reopen.
