Breathing isn’t easy in Kuching, Malaysia’s haziest spot at 10am as API hits 223

As of 10 a.m. on September 6, two regions in Sarawak, Malaysia, recorded very unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, with Kuching at 223 and Sri Aman at 215.

According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System (Apims), 35 areas across eight states and three Federal Territories registered unhealthy API levels.

Sarawak reported the most areas affected with ten, followed by Selangor with six and Johor with four.

API readings categorize air quality as good (0-50), moderate (51-100), unhealthy (101-200), very unhealthy (201-300), and hazardous (above 300).

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 — Two areas in Sarawak recorded very unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings as at 10am today, with Kuching recording the highest reading nationwide at 223, followed by Sri Aman at 215.

The Air Pollutant Index Management System (Apims) portal reported unhealthy API readings for 35 areas in eight states and three Federal Territories.

Sarawak recorded the highest number with 10 areas, followed by Selangor with six, Johor with four, Negeri Sembilan and Sabah with three each, and Pahang and Melaka with two each.

Kuala Lumpur also recorded two areas with unhealthy API readings, while Terengganu, Putrajaya and Labuan each recorded one.

In Sarawak, unhealthy air quality was recorded in Samalaju at 200, Bintulu at 198, Mukah at 194, Samarahan at 192, Sarikei at 188, IPD Serian and ILP Miri at 182 each, Sibu at 181 and Miri at 175.

In Selangor, the areas with unhealthy API readings were Johan Setia at 180, Shah Alam at 168, Banting and Petaling Jaya at 157 each, and Klang and Kuala Selangor at 154 each.

In Kuala Lumpur, Cheras recorded an API reading of 163 while Batu Muda recorded 161, while Putrajaya recorded 163.

In Pahang, Jerantut recorded an API reading of 168 while Temerloh recorded 164.

In Negeri Sembilan, Nilai recorded 167, Seremban 166 and Port Dickson 152.

In Johor, the areas with unhealthy API readings were Segamat at 160, Tangkak at 152, Kluang at 148 and Batu Pahat at 133.

In Sabah, Politeknik Kota Kinabalu recorded 164, Kota Kinabalu 161 and Kimanis 154, while Labuan recorded 161.

In Melaka, Alor Gajah and Bukit Rambai each recorded an API reading of 156.

In Terengganu, Paka recorded an unhealthy API reading of 107.

Other areas recorded good to moderate API readings.

An API reading of 0 to 50 indicates good air quality; 51 to 100, moderate; 101 to 200, unhealthy; 201 to 300, very unhealthy; and above 300, hazardous.
