Construction worker dies in Penang after seven-metre fall at Bayan Lepas site

A tragic accident occurred at a construction site in Bayan Lepas, resulting in the death of a worker who fell approximately seven meters while dismantling scaffolding.

The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) has initiated an investigation under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 to determine the cause of the accident and assess compliance with safety regulations.

Immediate actions included issuing a stop-work order and preserving the incident scene for further examination.

DOSH is currently gathering statements from the employer and witnesses to support the ongoing inquiry.

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 6 — A worker was killed after falling about seven metres while dismantling scaffolding at a construction site in Bayan Lepas here last Friday.

The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), in a statement today, said initial investigations found the incident occurred at 1.30 pm, when the victim was descending the scaffolding to take a lunch break.

“While descending the scaffolding, the victim fell from a height of about seven metres onto the floor.

“As a result of the incident, the victim sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Penang Hospital (HPP) for treatment but was pronounced dead,” it said.

Following the incident, Penang DOSH issued a stop work order and a prohibition of interference order to preserve the scene and ensure that investigations could be carried out smoothly.

DOSH said further investigations were underway, including recording statements from the employer and witnesses, to identify the cause of the accident and determine the level of compliance with occupational safety and health legislation.

The investigation is being conducted under Sections 15, 18A and 18B of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514), as well as the relevant occupational safety and health regulations. — Bernama
