Haze watch Oct 14: Lowered visibility, burning smell as PM2.5 hits high band in eastern, western and southern Singapore

If you are living or working in the eastern, southern and western regions of Singapore, and have observed lowered visibility and a burning smell, that's because PM2.5 concentration levels have hit the high band in these areas.

At 1pm on Wednesday (Oct 14), PM2.5 ranged from 88 in northern Singapore to 195 in the western region.

Concentration readings in eastern (160), southern (173) and western (195) Singapore are in the high band.

Meanwhile, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) remains in the unhealthy range across Singapore, with western Singapore recording the highest reading of 146, closely followed by the eastern (145) and western (146) regions.

When PM2.5 readings are in the high band, healthy persons should avoid strenuous outdoor activities for the next hour.

Those who are vulnerable or have lung and heart ailments are advised to avoid all outdoor activity for the next hour.

Weather, PSI forecast

According to the National Environment Agency's weather microsite, thundery showers are forecast mainly over northern, western and central Singapore in the afternoon.

But the agency also pointed out in its daily haze situation update on Tuesday evening that with dry conditions expected to persist over parts of southern Sumatra and Kalimantan, coupled with the prevailing winds, smoke haze may still drift towards Singapore.

The city state's 24-hour PSI forecast till this evening is expected to remain in the unhealthy range.

Members of the public should check the latest PM2.5 readings before participating in outdoor activities.
