Singapore and Brunei on Wednesday (Oct 14) signed a memorandum of understanding to formalise the mutual recognition of halal certificates and marks between the two countries.

The agreement was signed by the respective heads of the Islamic religious councils of Singapore and Brunei — MUIS chief executive Kadir Maideen and Brunei Islamic Religious Council (MUIB) acting secretary Pengiran Ahmad Faris Ramadhani, and witnessed by Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Zaqy Mohamad and his Bruneian counterpart, Minister of Religious Affairs Mohd Tashim bin Hassan.

The visit marked Zaqy's first official trip to Brunei since assuming the role in July .

In a media statement after the signing, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) said the mutual recognition of halal certificates and marks was a significant milestone in bilateral halal cooperation.

"The agreement will facilitate halal trade and strengthen consumer confidence in halal-certified products between Singapore and Brunei," MUIS stated.

It added that this will reduce duplication in halal certification processes and provide greater assurance to businesses and consumers, while maintaining the integrity of both countries' halal certification systems.

MUIS said the memorandum is its sixth international halal cooperation agreement and that it is honoured to be Brunei's first partner under such an arrangement.

The other countries with similar agreements with Singapore are: Indonesia, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Reflecting on the partnership, Zaqy highlighted that the countries share longstanding and close ties, including between their Muslim communities and religious institutions.

"This memorandum of understanding between MUIS and MUIB reflects the strong trust and cooperation between both our countries.

"With the mutual recognition of our halal certificates and marks, I look forward to seeing this partnership deepen for the benefit of our communities, businesses and consumers."

MUIS chief executive Kadir Maideen said the agreement provides a strong framework for MUIS and MUIB to deepen cooperation through technical exchanges and the sharing of expertise.

"With the mutual recognition of halal certificates and marks, we will further uphold the integrity and rigour of our respective certification systems, providing greater assurance to businesses and consumers when engaging with halal-certified products from both countries."

As part of his visit, the acting minister also had audiences with Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah. He also made a courtesy call on Brunei's mufti Dr Abdul Aziz Juned.

"These engagements reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Singapore and Brunei, including the close relationship between both countries' Muslim communities," MUIS said.
