A Singapore-registered container ship has sunk in the Strait of Hormuz after it was struck by unknown projectiles, while another vessel sustained hull damage, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said on Wednesday (Oct 14).
In its statement released on Wednesday night, MPA said the GFS Pride and GFS Giselle were reportedly struck by unknown projectiles on Oct 13 and 14 (Singapore time) respectively.
According to MPA, GFS Pride sustained damage and a fire on board, and has since sunk.
Meanwhile, GFS Giselle sustained hull damage and has since arrived under its own propulsion at a safe anchorage.
All 21 crew members on board GFS Pride and 22 members on board GFS Giselle were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported among both sets of crew.
There were no Singaporean crew members on board both vessels, MPA said, adding that it is in contact with the vessels' management company and is monitoring the situation closely.
The authority also expressed its "deep concerns" about the continued attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, including this latest incident involving two Singapore-registered vessels.
"Such attacks are unprovoked, unjustifiable, and a breach of international law. All actions affecting international shipping must fully comply with international law, in particular the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and must not endanger the safety of seafarers and ships at sea," it said.
