A total of five men, aged between 30 and 47, have been arrested for their involvement in smuggling duty-unpaid cigarettes near Marina South Wharf.

Police said in a news release on Thursday (Oct 15) morning that the five individuals include a 47-year-old Singaporean and four Indonesians between the ages of 30 and 44.

They were nabbed in an operation conducted by officers from the Police Coast Guard (PCG) and Police Intelligence Department near Marina South Wharf.

According to the police, the men were involved in vessel-to-shore contraband smuggling of 238 cartons and 120 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes.

PCG officers arrested a 44-year-old Indonesian man at the shore, while the remaining three Indonesians were arrested on board a Singapore-flagged vessel moored in the area.

Meanwhile, a 47-year-old Singaporean man was arrested for his involvement in the transportation of duty-unpaid cigarettes.

The offences have been referred to the Singapore Customs, the police said.

It is an offence to buy, sell, convey, possess or deal with duty-unpaid goods under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax Act.

Offenders face a fine of up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, jail time of up to six years, or both.

In this instance, the vessel used in committing the offences will also be seized for investigation.\

This is the second reported case of duty-unpaid cigarette smuggling this week.

On Oct 13, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority revealed that they had foiled a smuggling attempt at Woodlands Checkpoint on Sept 26 .

Over 980 packets of contraband cigarettes were found after officers sliced open the tyres of a Malaysia-registered cars during checks.
