Volcanic ash grounds 20 Malaysia-Jakarta flights by Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air

Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air have cancelled 20 flights between Malaysia and Jakarta due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau affecting operations at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

Malaysia Airlines cancelled 12 flights, urging passengers to update contact details for timely notifications.

Batik Air cancelled eight flights, citing safety concerns over visibility and navigation issues caused by ash, and offered passengers options to reschedule or obtain refunds.

Both airlines affirmed their commitment to passenger and crew safety while monitoring the situation closely.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 6 — Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air have cancelled a total of 20 flights between Malaysia and Jakarta today after volcanic ash from the ongoing eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted operations at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK).

Malaysia Airlines said in its post on X that it would cancel 12 flights between Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Jakarta (CGK), namely MH713, MH712, MH711, MH710, MH717, MH716, MH721, MH720, MH723, MH722, MH725 and MH724.

“Given the evolving situation, Malaysia Airlines is closely monitoring developments.

“Further updates on affected flights will be communicated directly to affected customers,” it said.

The national carrier reminded passengers to ensure their contact details are up to date via “My Booking” on its website to receive timely updates by email and SMS.

Customers may also contact its Live Chat support on the Malaysia Airlines website or its Global Contact Centre for assistance.

“The safety of our passengers and crew remains our utmost priority,” it added.

Meanwhile, Batik Air said in a separate statement that it had cancelled eight scheduled flights between Malaysia and Jakarta today, namely OD398, OD399, OD346, OD347, OD388, OD389, OD390 and OD391.

Six of the cancelled services operate between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Jakarta, while two operate between Subang and Jakarta.

It said the decision followed close coordination with aviation authorities and airport operators, reflecting its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew.

“The presence of volcanic ash in the airspace can reduce visibility, interfere with aircraft navigation systems, and potentially compromise engine performance,” it said.

Batik Air said it would continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on flight operations to and from the affected destinations through its official website and social media channels.

Affected passengers would also be notified through their registered contact details.

“Affected passengers may request to reschedule their travel to the next available Batik Air flight, subject to availability, or request a refund.

“Passengers are advised to contact Batik Air’s Customer Care Centre or their respective booking channels for assistance with their preferred option,” it said.

与此同时，巴迪克航空在另一份声明中表示，今天取消了马来西亚和雅加达之间的八个定期航班，分别是 OD398、OD399、OD346、OD347、OD388、OD389、OD390 和 OD391。

被取消的六趟航班中，有一趟是吉隆坡国际机场与雅加达之间的航班，另外两趟是梳邦机场与雅加达之间的航班。

声明称，该决定是在与航空当局和机场运营商密切协调后做出的，体现了其对乘客和机组人员安全与福祉的承诺。
