East Kalimantan governor Rudy Mas'ud has come under fire after a viral social media post allegedly showed him having breakfast with his wife at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) during a trip to Singapore for a medical check-up.

This comes as Indonesia battles its most intense wildfire season in 11 years , fuelled by El Nino-related dry weather conditions.

The photo was posted on Threads on Sunday (Oct 11) by user zumaahmd and it appeared to show a man resembling Rudy sitting across from a woman wearing a black hat.

The post garnered more than 11,000 likes as at Thursday morning and was subsequently reposted by multiple social media accounts.

In response, Ririn Sari Dewi, head of East Kalimantan's Communications and Informatics Department, told Indonesian news outlet Detik that Rudy was scheduled for a medical check-up at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on Oct 10.

She added that the governor had obtained both written and verbal permission from Indonesia's Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, for the trip.

Ririn, however, did not elaborate on the governor's health condition, saying only that he was scheduled for a routine medical check-up.

Rudy returned to Jakarta on Oct 11 and was in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, by Oct 12.

The governor made headlines earlier this year over an official car reportedly purchased for 8.5 billion rupiah ($642,000), The Straits Times reported.

He subsequently returned the vehicle following public criticism over what many perceived as excessive spending.

Netizens slam governor amid haze crisis

The viral posts drew criticism from Threads users, with some expressing anger over his visit while residents in East Kalimantan grappled with haze from forest fires.

One user called on others to report the sighting, describing it as "so heartless and inhumane" for the governor to be having breakfast at Marina Bay Sands while his constituents were struggling to breathe.

Another commenter wrote that residents were fighting for their lives while the governor enjoyed himself.

An East Kalimantan resident also expressed anger, saying: "As a resident of East Kalimantan, I am very angry."

Another commenter, writing on an Instagram post, acknowledged the pressures of public office but stressed that the governor is accountable to the public.

The commenter also questioned the timing of the trip, noting that the governor and his family had travelled to Singapore for medical check-ups while the F1 event was taking place.

AsiaOne has reached out to Governor Rudy for more information.
