JAKARTA, Sept 6 — Malaysians stranded in Jakarta after volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau disrupted flights are now scrambling for alternative arrangements, with some travellers facing delays of several days before they can return home.

One traveller who goes by the moniker Spritzerphilips on Threads was a picture of fatigue and anxiety after being stranded at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after her flight, scheduled for today, was cancelled.

“Stranded in Indonesia, can’t get back to Malaysia, asked for help from the embassy here but they said they couldn’t help either,” she wrote.

About an hour later, Spritzerphilips said she managed to secure a new flight for Tuesday.

“Hotel is sorted, ticket has also been rescheduled to Tuesday,” she wrote,, adding that she would consider travelling by land to Yogyakarta if the new flight was cancelled.

Other Threads users suggested travelling overland to Yogyakarta or Surabaya to catch a flight to Kuala Lumpur.

Another Malaysian traveller, Muhamad Norshahrizal Norizan, said on Facebook that he and his family had been stranded in Jakarta for two days after their flights were repeatedly cancelled.

“My family and I are stranded, our flight has been cancelled for two days already... today is the same,” he posted.

Facebooker Musfyrah Mansor also said she was stranded at the same airport after her flight was cancelled this morning.

She said her airline had informed passengers that flights would be rescheduled once conditions had returned to normal.

The disruption follows the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which sent volcanic ash into the airspace around Jakarta and forced Soekarno-Hatta International Airport to suspend operations today.

The airport closure disrupted 209 flights and affected 22,798 passengers, according to Indonesia’s Civil Aviation Director General Lukman F Laisa.

Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air have cancelled a combined 20 Malaysia-Jakarta flights today, while AirAsia has cancelled or rescheduled a number of services.

The situation remains fluid as Indonesian authorities monitor the spread of volcanic ash and its impact on flight operations.
