More than 700 cartons and 2,000 packets of duty-unpaid cigarettes were found hidden in modified compartments of a Malaysia-registered car at Woodlands Checkpoint on Oct 5.

Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers directed the car for enhanced checks after finding anomalies in the initial screening, the authority said in a Facebook post on Thursday (Oct 15).

The 32-year-old Malaysian male driver was arrested in connection with the case.

The suspect and seized items were referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.

ICA said it remains committed to facilitating trade and travel while keeping Singapore's borders safe and secure.

Under the Customs Act and the Goods and Services Tax Act, it is an offence to buy, sell, convey, possess or deal with duty-unpaid goods.

Offenders face a fine of up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded, imprisonment of up to six years, or both.

Vehicles used to commit such offences, as well as proceeds from the sale of duty-unpaid goods, may be forfeited.
