PETALING JAYA: Jordan Murray was signed to score goals but the Australian has gone beyond his original role to become a greater attacking threat for Brunei.

Coach Jamie McAllister initially tasked Murray with leading the line as a target man but, after recognising his fitness and tactical versatility, gave him the licence to roam.

The 31-year-old Murray has rewarded that faith with six goals and two assists in eight games in all competitions.

Murray said he was enjoying his scoring run but was keeping his feet on the ground.

“It is always nice to be on this scoring run. It’s important not to get too high though,” he said.

“The team have been really good in the attacking third, creating plenty of opportunities. I hope to continue this consistency and gain the team points along the way. I definitely have to give credit to coach Jamie.

“He allowed me to have a free role to create in attack. He has given me a large amount of trust and confidence to do these roles, which I’m relishing.”

In the FA Cup alone, he has scored five goals and provided two assists in four games, helping Brunei into the semi-finals.

Murray has scored in each of Brunei’s last four matches, which have yielded three wins and a draw.

Brunei beat Sabah 2-1 in the Super League on Sept 13, with Murray scoring once and then on Sept 16, Brunei beat Terengganu 3-1 in the FA Cup round-of-16 second leg, with Murray scoring and providing an assist.

In the FA quarter-finals, Brunei were held 3-3 by Kuala Lumpur in Bandar Seri Begawan on Sept 20 before winning the second leg 1-0 in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 11 to progress 4-3 on aggregate.

Murray contributed two goals and an assist across the two matches. Brunei will face defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

The first leg is at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium in Bandar Seri Begawan on Oct 23, with the second at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri on Nov 8.

Murray praised the strength of the squad.

“Determined ... we are a lot stronger all over the park, including the bench. There is a lot of competition, which is bringing out the best in players, and you’d think that would create a toxic environment, but not here.

“The boys are training fantastic and are hungry to start and to win. Huge credit to every player in this squad! Game by game, we are getting stronger.”

Murray’s immediate focus however, is Sunday’s Super League match against Kuching City at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium, Brunei’s first league home game of the season.

“We are looking forward to this fixture! Not only is it a derby, but it’s our first league home game! After a good result last game, we look forward to a tough challenge against a good team.”
