The Land Transport Authority's (LTA) active mobility enforcement officers are known to conduct frequent and route enforcement operations across Singapore, with the most recent round in September resulting in 70 non-compliant devices being impounded .
But what actually happens after such devices are sent "up the lorry"?
In a social media explainer posted on Thursday (Oct 15), LTA shared that such devices are stored securely while investigations are ongoing.
Its video shows rows of non-compliant devices, each labelled with tags and alphanumeric characters.
Upon the completion of investigations, the devices will be marked with a label that reads "Gazette for disposal".
According to LTA, its contractors then bring such devices to the scrape yard, where each device is taken apart so that their materials can be disposed of properly.
For example, batteries will need to be removed and placed in salt water to safely discharge its energy.
This process is known to short-circuit the battery, causing it to discharge rapidly.
Meanwhile, the different types of metals used on the devices are taken apart and separated, while connecting cables are removed.
During this process, rubber parts, plastics and waste materials are also removed and sorted accordingly.
The metal frames of such devices are then sent for crushing, LTA said.
Rounding off its sharing, the authority reminded active mobility device users to only use compliant devices or their devices could risk getting a one-way ticket — from pound to scrape yard.
