President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will make a five-day state visit to Sweden from Oct 17 to 21.

The visit follows Sweden King Carl XVI Gustaf's state visit to Singapore in November 2024, as the two countries mark 60 years of diplomatic relations.

"This will be the first state visit to Sweden by a Singapore President," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Friday (Oct 16) afternoon.

During his visit, President Tharman will travel to Stockholm and Gothenburg.

In Stockholm, he will be accorded a ceremonial welcome at the Royal Palace by the King and Queen Silvia, who will also host President Tharman to a state banquet.

Along with the King, President Tharman will engage with Swedish entrepreneurs and business leaders from various sectors, as well as Fryshuset, a Swedish non-profit organisation working on youth empowerment.

He is also scheduled to meet with Speaker of the Riksdag (Parliament) Andreas Norlen, other parliamentarians, and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

President Tharman will also deliver a lecture at the Stockholm City Council and attend a reception hosted for overseas Singaporeans in Sweden.

In Gothenburg, President Tharman and the King will visit the World of Volvo for an engagement with businesses on the future of transport. The two leaders will also visit the Chalmers University of Technology.

Vastra Gotland Governor Sten Tolgfors will also host the President for lunch.

President Tharman will be accompanied by his wife, Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli, Minister of State in the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Manpower Foo Cexiang, Members of Parliament Valerie Lee and Vikram Nair.

Business leaders and officials from the President’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, the National Research Foundation, the Economic Development Board, and Enterprise Singapore will be part of the President's delegation.

Singapore-Sweden relations

The two countries have strong economic, defence, education and research ties.

Ministers from both countries also have regular exchanges, such as in May 2026 when Senior Minister K Shanmugam visited Sweden to engage Swedish officials in the security and defence domains.

Meanwhile, economic relations between Singapore and Sweden are also growing, with over 500 Swedish companies in Singapore today. [[nid:747512]]
