What happens to non-compliant personal mobility devices (PMDs) seized by the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) active mobility enforcement officers?
They are crushed and scrapped, as shown in a video shared by the agency on Oct 16.
In a TikTok posted on Friday (Oct 16), LTA warned members of the public against using non-complaint PMDs with a video showing what happens to the devices once they have been sent "up lorry".
The video shows seized PMDs taken to a scrapyard where metal frames of such devices are sent for crushing.
"Still training to be limitless on our paths? That season's over. Know your device's limit, or your non-compliant PMD might just end up here," according to the caption.
In a previous video posted on Thursday, LTA explained that each device is taken apart so that their materials can be disposed of properly.
For example, batteries will need to be removed and placed in salt water to safely discharge its energy. This process is known to short-circuit the battery, causing it to discharge rapidly.
Removed batteries are placed in saltwater to discharge its stored energy before safe disposal.
Meanwhile, the different types of metals used on the devices are taken apart and separated, while connecting cables are removed. During this process, rubber parts, plastics and waste materials are also removed and sorted accordingly.
The metal frames of such devices are then sent for crushing, LTA said. The authority reminded active mobility device users to only use compliant devices as non-compliant devices "might just end up" being crushed in the scrapyard.
According to LTA, active mobility enforcement officers detected a total of 503 offences and impounded 70 devices during enforcement operations in September.
