Heavy rains are expected over the northern and western areas of Singapore on Saturday (Oct 17) afternoon.

In a heavy rain warning issued at 3.06pm, the Meteorological Service Singapore said moderate to heavy thundery showers are expected over the northern and western areas of the island between 3.45pm and 4.25pm.

Meanwhile, national water agency, PUB has alerted its Telegram subscribers to the warning.

No flood risk alerts have been issued as at 3.45pm.

In its daily haze situation update on Friday night , the National Environment Agency (NEA) said the 24-hour PSI is forecast to be between 150 to 230 — in the unhealthy to very unhealthy range.

This, even as some showers are expected over Singapore and surrounding region, including parts of Kalimantan

But there could be cause for limited optimism on Oct 17, with winds forecast to shift to blow from the southeast or south-southeast.

"The transport of smoke haze from Kalimantan to Singapore may be reduced. However, some smoke haze from Sumatra may drift towards Singapore," the agency stated.

On Sunday and Monday, showers are forecast over Singapore and parts of Kalimantan, while winds are expected to gradually weaken and blow from the southeast or south.

"This could further decrease the transport of smoke haze from Kalimantan to Singapore, although some smoke haze from Sumatra may drift towards Singapore," NEA said.

PM2.5 concentration readings spiked in the western region from about 12pm on Saturday, crossing 200µg/m3 and reaching as high as 243µg/m3.

By 3pm, the concentration reading had eased to 233.
