Iranian official warns Korea Hormuz deployment would mean joining war

A senior Iranian official has warned Korea against deploying military assets to the Strait of Hormuz, saying any action against Iran would be considered direct participation in the war.

“Any South Korean involvement against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz would amount to direct military participation in the aggression and war against Iran,” the unnamed senior political and security official was quoted as saying by Al Mayadeen, a Lebanon-based news network aligned with Iran and Hezbollah, on Friday.

The official also urged Seoul not to “sacrifice its interests and reputation” by supporting U.S. military operations.

The warning comes as Korea weighs a possible contribution to efforts to secure the key waterway amid growing pressure from Washington. Seoul said Friday that no decision has been made.

A senior U.S. administration official said Washington was “still waiting for South Korea to deploy resources to the region,” noting that the country is one of the largest buyers of Middle Eastern oil, media outlets reported Friday.

一名伊朗高级官员警告韩国不要向霍尔木兹海峡部署军事力量，称任何针对伊朗的行动都将被视为直接参与战争。

据黎巴嫩一家与伊朗和真主党结盟的新闻网络Al Mayadeen周五报道，一位不愿透露姓名的韩国高级政治和安全官员表示：“韩国在霍尔木兹海峡对伊朗的任何介入都将构成对伊朗的直接军事侵略和战争。”

该官员还敦促首尔不要通过支持美国军事行动“牺牲自身利益和声誉”。

在华盛顿方面施加越来越大的压力之际，韩国正权衡是否为保障这条关键水道的安全做出贡献。首尔方面周五表示，尚未做出任何决定。

据媒体周五报道，一位美国高级政府官员表示，华盛顿“仍在等待韩国向该地区部署资源”，并指出韩国是中东石油最大的买家之一。
