Online crime cases in Negeri Sembilan decreased by 10 per cent to 2,539 as of September, with financial losses dropping by RM33.58 million.

E-commerce fraud cases increased by 24 per cent, while non-existent loan cases rose by 11 per cent compared to last year.

Public awareness and strategic collaborations helped reduce cases and losses, but e-commerce fraud requires urgent measures, encouraging public vigilance and use of resources like the NSRC hotline.

SEREMBAN, Oct 20 — Online crime cases in Negeri Sembilan dropped by 268, or 10 per cent, to 2,539 as of September this year, compared with 2,807 cases in the corresponding period last year, while financial losses dropped by RM33.58 million to RM39.86 million.

However, Negeri Sembilan police chief Datuk Alzafny Ahmad said e-commerce fraud cases rose by 24 per cent to 828, compared with 667 in the corresponding period last year, while cases involving non-existent loans increased by 11 per cent to 404 from 365.

“Investment scam cases fell by 20 per cent to 298 from 374, while total losses declined by RM24.50 million, or 66 per cent.

“Phone scam cases also fell by 28 per cent to 784 from 1,095, with losses amounting to RM7.24 million,” he said in a statement here today.

Alzafny attributed the decline in cases and financial losses to public awareness programmes, enforcement efforts and strategic collaborations, particularly those targeting phone scams and investment fraud, which had previously accounted for a significant proportion of cases and losses.

However, he said the increase in e-commerce fraud cases required urgent attention and stronger preventive measures to curb the upward trend.

He advised the public to remain vigilant and verify information before conducting transactions. He also urged them to use available resources, including the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline at 997 and the Semak Mule portal, to help protect themselves from scams. — Bernama
