Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers foiled an attempt to smuggle an assortment of controlled weapons and ammunition into Singapore on Oct 1.

In a social media post on Tuesday (Oct 20) evening, it said the attempt was made via an inbound cargo container and detected by its officers at Pasir Panjang scanning station.

According to ICA, the container was directed for further checks based on information received from its Integrated Targeting Centre.

Those assessed to be of higher risk are flagged for checks upon arrival at Singapore's checkpoints.

During the checks, an image analyst noticed anomalies in the scanned image of the cargo container and referred the container for enhanced checks.

There, search and examination officers uncovered a total of six packets and a bottle of airsoft (BB) pellets, 40 packets of 72 caps and five units of replica guns.

The case was then referred to the police, and a 19-year-old male teenager is assisting with ongoing investigations under the Guns, Explosives and Weapons Control Act.

Under the Act, police approval is required for the import or export of toy or replica guns.

The police have stated in previous cases involving replica guns that they will not approve the import of any toy or replica guns that bear close resemblance to actual firearms.

This is due to public safety reasons.

Those found guilty of importing replica guns without a permit for the first time can be fined up to $100,000 or up to three times the value of the goods, or jailed for up to two years, or both.

Repeat offenders face double the fine or up to four times the value of the goods, or jail for up to three years, or both.
