The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) conducted a Special Inspection on Squishy Toys from October 1 to 14, resulting in the seizure of 5,801 toys worth RM70,428 for lacking the required Safety Compliance Mark.

The operation involved inspections of 1,845 premises, aiming to enforce compliance with child toy safety standards under the Consumer Protection Act 1999.

In a separate case, a trader was fined RM1,000 by the Putrajaya Magistrates' Court for misleading advertisement practices.

KPDN urges consumers to report suspicious toy sales through available communication channels.

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 25 — The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) seized 5,801 squishy toys worth RM70,428 nationwide for failing to display the required Safety Compliance Mark.

KPDN Enforcement director-general Datuk Azman Adam said the seizures stemmed from 15 enforcement actions during a Special Inspection on Squishy Toys conducted from October 1 to 14 to ensure compliance with child toy safety standards.

“A total of 1,845 premises were inspected, involving manufacturers, importers, wholesalers and retailers.

“KPDN views child toy safety seriously and will not compromise with any party that fails to comply with regulations under the Consumer Protection Act 1999 (Act 599),” he said in a statement today.

He also advised the public, particularly parents, to always check labels and safety compliance marks before buying toys for their children.

Consumers with information on the sale of suspicious toys can lodge complaints via WhatsApp at 019-848 8000 or 019-279 4317; the KPDN e-Aduan portal at e-aduan.kpdn.gov.my; the KPDN Call Centre at 1-800-886-800; or the Ez ADU KPDN smartphone app.

On a separate case, he said a trader was fined RM1,000 by the Putrajaya Magistrates’ Court last Thursday after pleading guilty to making a misleading representation in an advertisement.

He said KPDN had received a complaint from a customer, who had received a jubah instead of a baju kurung as advertised.

“Following the incident on February 27, 2024, an investigation was carried out, which led to the individual’s prosecution in court,” he said.

He said the accused was charged under Section 10(1)(a) of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 [Act 599] and was liable to be punished under Section 25(1)(b) of the same Act. The trader paid the fine. — Bernama
