GEORGE TOWN, Oct 25 — Everything happened so fast when 86-year-old Wong Poh Lim, who was showering upstairs, rushed to safety after being alerted about a landslide today.

She said her daughter, Chang Mei Nuo, 68, informed her about the incident before they quickly went downstairs to escape. However, upon reaching the ground floor, she discovered that her son-in-law, Wong Kar Lin, 73, was already trapped under the rubble in the landslide at their home in Taman Seri Rambai, Paya Terubong here this morning.

“We were very shocked and immediately ran outside to save ourselves... everything happened so fast. My daughter said there was a loud sound during the incident, but I didn’t hear it because I was showering when the landslide happened.

“To this day, I am still traumatised and saddened by the incident,” she said when met at the scene today.

During the incident at around 8.36am, Wong, who was also a doctor, was found trapped after the landslide affected his home, and the victim was extricated by firefighters at around 11.20am.

At the time of the incident, only Poh Lim, Chang, and the victim were at the house, while the couple’s four children live separately.

For Poh Lim, the tragedy was deeply heartbreaking because her son-in-law had been part of their family for over 30 years and was described as a good person.

Although she survived without any injuries, she admitted she is still in shock over the incident that claimed the life of her loved one.

Meanwhile, Chang, who still looked gloomy when met, could not hide her grief over the loss of her husband in an incident she described as an unforgettable experience throughout their time living there.

Amidst the sorrow, she remained grateful that her husband’s body was successfully retrieved from the soil and concrete debris in an intact condition.

Earlier, the woman was seen wailing and crying as soon as her husband’s body was brought out from the soil and concrete rubble in the kitchen area of their house.

Meanwhile, a neighbour who wished to be identified as Lim, in his 30s, said he was sleeping when he heard a very loud crashing sound, given that the location of the incident was only about 20 meters from his home.

“I was sleeping when I heard a loud sound like thunder. The sound was very loud because the location of the incident is indeed close to my house. I then went out to check the situation and found that a landslide had occurred at the back of the victim’s house,” he said.

Lim, who has lived in the area for over 30 years with his wife and parents, said that this landslide incident was not the first time happening there; instead, a similar incident was reported about 10 years ago near a small temple at the back of the area.

Although the previous collapse site had been repaired, he said residents are still concerned about the safety of their surroundings, especially following the proposal for a 47-story building development in the area.

He said that every time it rains heavily, mud often flows down and covers the road, continually raising concerns among the residents. — Bernama
