Seoul stocks traded lower in Seoul late Monday morning as investors awaited major chipmakers’ third-quarter earnings and the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy decision later in the week. The KOSPI fell 71.49 points, or 1.29 percent, to 5,478.81 at 11:20 a.m. Investors were watching SK hynix and Samsung Electronics results for signals on AI chip demand and memory prices, while LIG D&A shares tumbled amid news of a possible loss of its defense contractor designation.

SK hynix was scheduled to report earnings on Wednesday, followed by Samsung Electronics on Thursday.

The Federal Reserve’s two-day policy meeting was set to start Tuesday, U.S. time, and the central bank was widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged amid persistent inflationary pressures.

Samsung Electronics shares fell 1.62 percent, while SK hynix edged up 0.08 percent; LG Energy Solution declined 1.7 percent and Hyundai Motor fell 2.88 percent.

LIG D&A dropped 10.67 percent after news that South Korea’s arms procurement agency was considering revoking its defense contractor designation in a small drone project over bribery allegations.

The Korean won traded at 1,323.0 won per U.S. dollar at 11:20 a.m., up 3.2 won from the previous session’s close.
