Singapore's manufacturing output grew by 3.4 per cent year-on-year in September, slowing from 15.4 per cent growth in August, amid a sharp decline in biomedical manufacturing output.

Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output in September increased by 9 per cent, easing from the 16.8 per cent growth in August, according to data from the Economic Development Board (EDB) released on Monday (Oct 26).

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output decreased 3.9 per cent, compared with a 0.5 per cent decline in August, while output excluding biomedical manufacturing dropped by 5.5 per cent.

Growth in all clusters except chemicals, biomedical manufacturing

EDB data also showed that all clusters recorded growth on a year-on-year basis in September, except chemicals and biomedical manufacturing.

Precision engineering grew 31 per cent, supported by higher production of semiconductor equipment in the machinery and systems segment.

Meanwhile, transport engineering grew by 10.6 per cent, as the land and aerospace segments expanded, with aerospace supported by higher production of aircraft parts and sustained maintenance, repair and overhaul jobs from commercial airlines.

However, this growth was partially offset by lower shipyard activity and lower production of oil and gas field equipment in the marine and offshore engineering segment.

The electronics and general manufacturing sectors recorded growth of 5.7 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.

Chemicals output declined 4.6 per cent, which EDB said was weighed down by the other chemicals segment and petrochemicals segment.

The other chemicals segment recorded lower output of fragrances while petrochemicals production remained constrained by softer demand and feedstock supply disruptions, it explained.

Biomedical manufacturing output fell 32.8 per cent. EDB noted that this was led by the pharmaceuticals segment, which saw a different mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients being produced.

The medical technology segment fell due to softer export demand, it said.

The next monthly manufacturing performance will be released on Nov 26.
