KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — If you live in Kepong, you’ve probably driven past Soh Kee Eatery and maybe even dismissed it as just another restaurant.

Located in a row of single-storey lots inside Bukit Maluri Industrial Estate, you will only know of its existence from the banners.

Walk in to find a big surprise: roast meats with a taste profile that suits the residents nearby.

Their story started out as a humble stall in Selayang’s Restoran Hwa Yan Kai offering wantan mee using their own roasted meats like char siu and roast pork.

In the middle of the year, they moved to their own space opposite Jubin BMS, a multi-storey tile shop located in the industrial park.

It’s a family-run operation where the second generation is now helping out and learning the ropes to manage the business.

Using a charcoal fire, their char siu is superb for its layers of melt-in-the-mouth fat and tender meat wrapped with a dark crust that isn’t overly sweet.

I appreciated that less glaze was used, which resulted in a crust that wasn’t hardened by too much maltose.

That restraint, resulting in a less sweet char siu , nods to the general preference of their customers who avoid overly sweet food items.

Even their roast pork showed off careful roasting, ensuring it wasn’t dried out at the bottom while retaining a pinkish tinge.

That good control of fire resulted in a crispy golden skin that crunched in the mouth and soft meat — the best way to enjoy roast pork.

Order a platter of char siu and roast pork for RM12 to pair with the noodles.

You get thin strands soaked in their sauce, which have an al dente bite paired with big chunks of fried lard.

There’s also a chicken curry version of wantan mee (RM9) where chunks of soft potatoes and chicken pieces are served with a semi-thick gravy.

The wantans are a separate order (three for RM2.50), where those silky skin bites are filled with minced pork that isn’t clenched into a clump but remains in a fluffier state.

You can also get chicken rice here, with a choice of poached or roasted.

And if you don’t feel like battling the traffic, there’s always the handy FoodPanda option for delivery to your doorstep.

Kawasan Perusahaan Taman Bukit Maluri,
