Fresher air in Malaysia again: Only Samalaju in Sarawak still unhealthy after months of haze

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — Malaysia is breathing easier today, with only one place in the country still recording unhealthy air after a haze season that began in August.

Samalaju in Sarawak is the lone station in the unhealthy range, with its Air Pollutant Index (API) reading edging up to 152 at 9am from 151 at 7am, according to the Department of Environment’s Malaysia Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) website.

All Klang Valley readings were below 100 at 9am, with some places in the “good” category.

Banting (45) and Kuala Selangor (47) were rated “good”, while Petaling Jaya (52), Shah Alam (54), Klang (58) and Johan Setia (66) were moderate.

Putrajaya recorded 54, while Cheras read 58 and Batu Muda 84 — the highest of the Klang Valley readings.

It is a sharp turnaround from August 28, when six of the 19 unhealthy stations nationwide were in the Greater Klang Valley, with Cheras at 160.

The smog was then thick enough that the government moved the National Day Prime Minister’s Address from Dataran Merdeka to the indoor Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

Johor, which had been struggling with high pollution levels, saw all its stations read below 100 at 9am.

An API reading of zero to 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous.

根据马来西亚环境部空气污染指数管理系统 (APIMS) 网站的数据，砂拉越州的萨马拉朱是唯一一个空气污染指数处于不健康范围的监测站，其空气污染指数 (API) 读数从早上 7 点的 151 上升到早上 9 点的 152。

上午9点，巴生谷所有地区的读数均低于100，部分地区达到“良好”级别。

万津（45）和瓜拉雪兰莪（47）被评为“良好”，而八打灵再也（52）、莎阿南（54）、巴生（58）和约翰塞蒂亚（66）则为中等。

布城的读数为 54，蕉赖的读数为 58，峇都慕达的读数为 84，是巴生谷读数最高的。

这与 8 月 28 日的情况截然相反，当时全国 19 个空气质量不达标的监测站中有 6 个位于大巴生谷地区，其中蕉赖的空气质量指数高达 160。

柔佛州此前一直饱受高污染水平的困扰，但上午 9 点，该州所有监测站的读数均低于 100。

API 读数在 0 到 50 之间为良好，51 到 100 之间为中等，101 到 200 之间为不健康，201 到 300 之间为非常不健康，300 以上为危险。
