Shell kicks off third consecutive week of petrol price increases

Residents in Singapore may be getting a reprieve from the heat and haze in November , but there's no let up on motorists' wallets as petrol prices rise for the third consecutive week.

In a price board update published at 1pm on Thursday (Oct 29), Shell announced a 3-cent hike across its 95-, 98-octane and V-Power petrol, while keeping its diesel price unchanged.

This comes after last week's adjustments posted by Caltex , followed by Shell , Esso and Sinopec , carried out between Oct 21 and 23. Only SPC did not join in the last round of petrol price hikes.

Following the latest round of rate increments, the price of the more popular 95-octane petrol at major fuel companies now ranges from $3.56 at SPC to $3.63 at Shell.

As compared to its rates before Sept 14, when prices rose again after more than two months , Shell's 95-octane petrol has now risen by 26 cents.

Meanwhile, Cnergy and Smart Energy have held their price for the petrol grade at $2.69 and $2.62 respectively.

Prices are correct as at 7pm on Oct 29. All prices are before discounts.

Oil prices fell on Thursday , paring gains made a day earlier , as hopes for peace talks took the edge off renewed concerns over Middle East supply disruptions from escalating regional conflict.

Brent crude futures fell US$1.27 (S$1.63), or 1.1 per cent, to US$114.05 a barrel by 5.22pm (Singapore time). US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down US$1.51, or 1.5 per cent, at US$101.27.

"Oil prices are under pressure today amid renewed diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East," UBS analyst Giovanni Staunovo said.

US Vice President JD Vance sought to revive peace negotiations by sending a letter to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei, the Wall Street Journal said on Wednesday, citing US officials and people familiar with the matter.

Qatari mediators have presented Iran with a new draft deal to end the war with the US and Israel , an official briefed on the negotiations said, but a senior Iranian official dismissed it as unacceptable ideas that did not amount to an offer.

Iran's foreign minister said on Wednesday Tehran continued to give diplomacy a chance to succeed and flagged the possibility of completing its seven-day plan in less than a week if adopted.

Concerns over intensified attacks by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis and fears the US may launch an attack on Iran following its midterm elections set for Nov 3, limited the decline, however.
