Singapore on Thursday (Oct 29) took over chairmanship of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) from the Philippines as the 13th ADMM-Plus, held in Cebu's Mactan, came to a close.

The ADMM-Plus is an official platform that brings together defence ministers from the 11-member bloc, with their counterparts from eight dialogue partner countries to strengthen security and defence.

The eight dialogue partner countries are Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.

Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing highlighted the progress made by the ADMM and ADMM-Plus over the years as he represented Singapore to take over the meeting series' chairmanship. He also reaffirmed the Republic's commitment to working closely with member countries to address evolving security challenges.

“It is our responsibility and our hope that we will be able to work closely with everyone in this hall and beyond.”

This, Chan added, will ensure the ADMM/ADMM-Plus maintains its relevance to both current and emerging challenges.

Singapore will take over the ASEAN chairmanship in 2027, succeeding the Philippines. The chairmanship also coincides with the 11-member bloc's 60th anniversary.

In a statement issued on Thursday evening, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said ADMM-Plus defence ministers exchanged views on the current geopolitical context and its implications for regional peace and security.

MINDEF added that the Singapore defence minister also underscored the importance of the ADMM-Plus in allowing for strategic and constructive dialogue through its open and inclusive nature, including its unique value as a platform for practical cooperation on shared challenges amongst member countries.

“There is a diversity of aspirations, a diversity of capabilities around the world, and we will need a mechanism that allows us to build an overlapping network of bilateral and plurilateral ties in order to advance our shared interests," Chan said at the meeting.

While in Cebu, Chan, who is also Coordinating Minister for Public Services, also held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Australia, Japan, South Korea and Vietnam.

According to MINDEF, the ministers reaffirmed the strong bilateral relationships between their countries and looked forward to continued areas of collaboration.
