KUCHING, Oct 30 — Emergency repair works on a critical 750mm mild steel cement-lined (MSCL) water main on Jalan Lapangan Terbang were completed at 2am today, said Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd.

The utility provider said water supply restoration is now underway in stages.

It said the unscheduled water supply interruption was necessitated by repair works on the 750mm pipeline located off Jalan Kuching Ranger Depot after it was damaged by third-party operations associated with the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project.

The disruption affected consumers in the Datuk Muda Tank supply area, Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Jalan Tun Jugah, Jalan Batu Lintang, and surrounding areas.

The company had initially estimated the interruption to last from 4.30pm on October 29 until 5am on October 30.

In a progress update issued at 11.45pm yesterday, the utility provider said the leak location had been identified and repair crews were dewatering the site to facilitate repair works.

Following completion of the repair works at 2am, Sarawak Water said valve reopening and network pressurisation had commenced, with water supply expected to be restored gradually.

Consumers in higher-elevation areas or those located towards the end of distribution lines may experience a longer delay before normal water pressure is fully restored.

The company also cautioned that consumers might temporarily experience discoloured or muddy water, as well as milky-looking water, when supply resumed.

It explained that sediment dislodged from the pipelines could cause temporary discolouration, while trapped air bubbles could give the water a milky appearance.

Consumers are advised to run their external taps for a few minutes until the water becomes completely clear before using it for cooking, drinking, or washing.

Sarawak Water also advised consumers in the affected areas to use water wisely and thanked residents and businesses for their patience and understanding throughout the emergency repair operation.

The utility provider said it would continue monitoring the distribution system as water supply recovery progresses. — The Borneo Post
