Lee Chong Wei Cup to go international next year, seeks Badminton Asia sanction

Datuk Lee Chong Wei plans to expand the Lee Chong Wei Cup to an international tournament next year, seeking sanctioning from Badminton Asia.

National coaches carefully observed the tournament to scout potential talent for the Badminton Association of Malaysia trials, not limiting selection to finalists or semi-finalists.

The inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup received over 2,200 junior participants nationwide, offering a total prize pool of RM104,000 across Under-13, Under-15, and Under-17 categories.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 — National badminton legend Datuk Lee Chong Wei plans to expand his newly launched Lee Chong Wei Cup into an international tournament next year.

The former world No. 1 men’s singles player said he aimed to obtain sanctioning from Badminton Asia for the international edition while continuing to run the local tournament.

“I have already planned two tournaments for next year, one local and one international… The second will be an international tournament.

“We are looking for a time slot and seeking sanctioning from Badminton Asia. We need to fix the dates carefully because I don’t want to clash with other junior tournaments in Indonesia or elsewhere,” he told reporters on the final day of Lee Chong Wei Cup at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara, here on Sunday.

The three-time Olympic Games men’s singles silver medallist also said that national coaches kept a close eye throughout the event to scout potential talent for Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) trials at the end of the year.

However, Chong Wei, who is also BAM performance committee chairman, pointed out that selection would not be restricted solely to players who reached the finals or semi-finals.

“Even someone who reached the quarter-finals might show talent and get called up.

“Even if they lost early, if we see talent, we might call them for selection to see how they progress in training at BAM,” he said.

The 43-year-old Penangite was also satisfied with the overwhelming response to the nine-day tournament, which attracted over 2,200 junior participants nationwide across three categories, namely Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17.

The inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup, which kicked off August 29 and concluded today, offered a total prize pool of RM104,000. — Bernama

“我们正在寻找合适的比赛时间，并寻求亚洲羽毛球协会的批准。我们需要仔细确定比赛日期，因为我不想与印尼或其他地方的青少年赛事冲突，”他在周日于武吉加拉体育场举行的李宗伟杯决赛日告诉记者。

这位曾三次获得奥运会男子单打银牌的选手还表示，国家队教练在整个赛事期间密切关注着比赛，以便为年底马来西亚羽毛球协会（BAM）的选拔赛物色潜在人才。

然而，同时也是马来西亚羽毛球协会绩效委员会主席的李宗伟指出，入选者并不仅限于进入决赛或半决赛的球员。

“即使是打进四分之一决赛的球员，也有可能展现出天赋并被征召入队。”

“即使他们早早出局，如果我们发现他们有天赋，我们可能会邀请他们参加选拔，看看他们在BAM的训练中进步如何，”他说。

这位 43 岁的槟城人对为期九天的锦标赛的热烈反响也感到满意，该锦标赛吸引了来自全国各地的 2200 多名青少年参赛者，分为 13 岁以下、15 岁以下和 17 岁以下三个组别。
