KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — The youngest candidate in the 16th Melaka state election, Muhammad Mukhlisul Mubin Julasapiyah, will contest the Kuala Linggi state seat.

Representing Pakatan Harapan (PH), the 24-year-old from Parti Amanah and a law graduate of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia faces a three-cornered fight for the seat.

He will be challenged by incumbent Datuk Rosli Abdullah of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Dr Nur Farhana Hamzah of Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama).

In the 2021 Melaka polls, PH’s Farzana Hayani Nasir set the youngest-candidate record, at 21.

Kuala Linggi is one of five state seats under the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency, with 15,483 registered voters eligible to cast their ballots this time around.

Meanwhile, Capt (Rtd) Mohamad Jaafar, 66, also representing PH, is the oldest candidate in this election, contesting the Telok Mas seat against incumbent Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman of BN and Muhammad Hazwan Mustafa of Bersama.

The oldest candidate in the previous polls was Datuk Kalsom Noordin, 68, who contested the Pengkalan Batu seat on a BN ticket.

Telok Mas is one of five state seats under the Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency, with 29,751 eligible registered voters.

Of the 79 candidates in this election, 14 are women, a slight decline from the previous election, which saw 16 women among 112 candidates, with PH fielding the most female candidates at six.

The Election Commission has set November 14 as polling day, with early voting on November 10.
