A 52-year-old British man will be charged in court on Thursday (Nov 5) with voyeurism and obstructing the course of justice on board an aircraft.

Police said on Wednesday that their officers from the Airport Police Division were on Oct 7 alerted to a case of voyeurism onboard a flight from Japan to Singapore.

He had allegedly concealed a camera in one of the toilets and later activated its recording function remotely through a mobile application on his phone after leaving the toilet.

The camera was discovered by a cabin crew member who used the toilet.

She removed it and went on to alert her colleague about the discovery.

Investigations revealed that the man found that the camera had been removed when he attempted to retrieve it.

He then allegedly deleted the application and all related photographs on his phone in an attempt to avoid detection.

However, he was detained for investigations upon arrival at Changi Airport, and his mobile phone and camera seized as case exhibits.

If found guilty of voyeurism, he could be jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or a combination of these punishments.

The offence of obstructing the course of justice carries an imprisonment term of up to seven years, a fine, or both.

The police warned would-be perpetrators that they have zero tolerance towards sexual offenders who threaten the personal safety of the community, adding that offenders will be dealt with sternly in accordance with the law.

Those who witness an incident of voyeurism or are aware of someone being a victim of voyeurism should inform the police immediately.

"Reporting such crimes early is crucial in helping the police identify and arrest the perpetrators."
