Malaysia drops unsubsidised fuel prices 1 week after hike, citing increase in refined supplies

One week after prices were raised , Malaysia's finance ministry on Wednesday (Nov 4) evening announced reductions to its unsubsidised fuel rates for the week of Nov 5 to 11.

In its weekly fuel price announcement, the ministry said prices of unsubsidised Ron95 and Ron97 will fall by 15 sen and 20 sen respectively, while unsubsidised diesel rate will fall by 15 sen.

The price of unsubsidised diesel, Ron97 and Ron95 now stand at RM5.12 (S$1.61), RM4.70 and RM4.27 respectively

Prior to last week's hike, unsubsidised fuel prices had fallen for two straight weeks , with the ministry explaining then that this was due to doubts on oil supplies and volatile global oil prices.

It said this week's price reductions were due to the regional petroleum market showing signs of moderation following the increase in refined fuel supplies, including petrol and diesel stocks in Singapore.

"This development, together with the decline in Brent crude oil prices at the end of the Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM) calculation period, points to the possibility of downward price pressures," the ministry added.

Malaysia uses the APM formula — introduced in 1983 to stabilise fuel prices in line with market fluctuations — when determining weekly petrol prices.

But the ministry also warned that geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East may continue to pose risks to the stability of world petroleum prices.

Fuel subsidies are expected to remain high at about RM40 billion in 2027, it added.

Oil prices fell more than eight per cent to settle at their lowest in more than two months on Wednesday after President Donald Trump's Republican Party lost control of Congress in midterm elections , as investors bet that the shift in power could hasten the end of the US-Israeli war with Iran.

Brent futures settled US$8.98, or 8.7 per cent lower, at US$94.62 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell US$7.97, or 8.3 per cent, to US$88.12.

Both benchmarks closed at their lowest since Aug 31.

Trump now faces a choice between a negotiated exit and a riskier escalation.

A weakened Trump, facing a Democratic Congress able to constrain his military options , has greater incentive to seek a deal, said two sources close to Gulf government circles.

A full-scale assault on Iran now looks less likely, they said.
