Singpass passkeys extended to Android users from Sept 9

Just slightly over two months after Singpass introduced a new passkey login for iPhone (iOS) users, the feature is now available to Android users too.

Announcing this in a statement on Wednesday (Sept 9), the Government Technology Agency (GovTech) said the rollout begins on Sept 9.

Users will receive notifications via their Singpass app in phases, reminding them to create their passkeys, the agency added.

"They should also keep their Singpass app updated to enjoy this new feature." a spokesperson said.

Support for desktop logins is planned for by the end of 2026, according to GovTech.

Providing an update since the June 30 rollout, GovTech said that about 800,000 users have since created their passkey in the Singpass app.

The agency said it will continue to work with agencies such as the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and People’s Association (PA) to raise awareness and support users who need more help using passkeys to log in.

What Singpass passkeys do

Passkeys use a public-private key cryptography to verify that a login is taking place with a legitimate service.

The private key will be stored securely on the user's device, protected by their biometrics — e.g. fingerprint or face recognition — or app passcode. The corresponding public key will be registered with Singpass.

This new login method for Singpass users on iOS devices, available since July 1, is intended to strengthen security for the Republic's residents and reduce the risk of scams such as phishing.

The new login system strengthens defences against emerging cyber threats without compromising a seamless digital experience, while offering strong resistance to phishing attacks, said the agency in its June 30 statement.

These Singpass passkeys, said the agency, are device-bound and since no login credentials like passwords or One-Time-Password (OTPs) are entered, the risk of credential theft is also significantly reduced.

They cannot be authenticated on fake websites, and only work on real government websites and official private sector services integrated with Singpass, protecting users against phishing scams.
