Dzulkefly: Rescue teams begin evacuation of Long Lellang helicopter crash victims

Rescue teams, including the Royal Malaysia Police and Fire and Rescue Department, initiated evacuation efforts for victims of a helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Sarawak, as confirmed by Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad.

A pilot and four healthcare personnel lost their lives while conducting flying doctor services (FDS).

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has emphasized that flight operations, including emergency medical evacuation missions, adhere to safety protocols approved by relevant agencies, not under the MOH's jurisdiction.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 9 — Rescue teams are working to evacuate victims of the helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Sarawak, with the operation beginning at 7.30 am today, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dzulkefly Ahmad said.

He said the operation was being carried out by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

Dzulkefly said hospitals in Miri were also fully prepared at all levels to receive the victims once they were evacuated from the crash site.

“As of this morning, the evacuation operation is being carried out by the rescue teams, namely the Royal Malaysia Police and the Fire and Rescue Department,” he told a press conference here today.

Also present were Health director-general Datuk Dr Mahathar Abd Wahab and Deputy Health director-general (Public Health) Dr Ismuni Bohari.

Meanwhile, Dzulkefly said the MOH always takes into account input from the authorities on technical and aviation safety aspects before making any decision on the use of helicopter assets for FDS.

He also confirmed that the healthcare personnel who died in the helicopter crash were carrying out routine FDS duties when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, when asked about flight approval for FDS operations, Dr Mahathar said every movement of an aircraft or helicopter must comply with the prescribed safety procedures before permission to fly is granted.

He said the decision on whether a flight is allowed to operate is subject to approval by the relevant agencies and does not fall under the jurisdiction of the MOH.

“Whether permission to fly is granted or not is subject to approval by the relevant agencies, not the MOH,” he said.

Elaborating, Dr Mahathar explained that FDS operations comprise several components, including scheduled services carried out periodically according to the needs of residents in rural areas, as well as emergency medical evacuation (medevac) services to transport critically ill patients for treatment.

He said medevac missions would continue to be carried out whenever there was an urgent need to transport patients, subject to flight approval after taking into account safety assessments and prevailing weather conditions.

“However, as for scheduled services, the MOH will review the matter and, from time to time, provide input to the team on the ground,” he said.

与此同时，祖基菲里表示，卫生部在决定是否将直升机资产用于FDS之前，总是会考虑有关部门在技术和航空安全方面的意见。

他还证实，在直升机坠毁事故中丧生的医护人员事发时正在执行例行的FDS任务。

与此同时，当被问及FDS运营的飞行许可时，马哈塔尔博士表示，飞机或直升机的每一次飞行都必须遵守规定的安全程序，才能获得飞行许可。

他表示，是否允许航班运营的决定须经相关机构批准，不属于卫生部的管辖范围。

他说：“是否批准飞行取决于相关机构的批准，而不是卫生部的批准。”

马哈塔医生进一步解释说，FDS 的运作包括几个组成部分，包括根据农村地区居民的需求定期进行的定期服务，以及将危重病人运送到医院接受治疗的紧急医疗救援（医疗救援）服务。

他表示，在经过安全评估和考虑当前天气状况后获得飞行批准，只要有紧急需要运送病人，医疗救援任务将继续进行。

“但是，对于定期服务，卫生部将审查此事，并会不时向一线团队提供意见，”他说。
