Hua Hin denies mercy to savage killer who bludgeoned a hotel worker to death in a drug crazed robbery

Hua Hin Provincial Court has sentenced Rattikorn “Sam” Yingyod, 36, to death for the savage January murder of hotel receptionist Wirin “Nui” Thaolipo, 35, who was struck 14 times with an iron bar during a robbery while her boyfriend watched the first moments through a live video call. The killer fled with two phones, her black bag and just ฿350 before more than 100 police joined a 36-hour manhunt that ended with him being found near railway tracks. Yet even after Rattikorn confessed, judges refused to reduce the sentence, citing the exceptional brutality of the attack, his lack of fear of the law and the devastating loss inflicted on Wirin’s family.

Hua Hin Provincial Court sentenced Rattikorn “Sam” Yingyod, 36, to death on Tuesday for murdering a hotel receptionist. He beat Wirin “Nui” Thaolipo, 35, repeatedly with an iron bar during a January robbery. Notably, Rattikorn admitted the offence before the court. Yet his confession failed to secure any reduction in sentence. Judges ruled the killing was exceptionally brutal and gave no grounds for leniency. As a result, the court imposed the death penalty on September 8.

The ruling came almost eight months after Wirin was killed during an overnight shift in Hua Hin. The attack happened at about 3.15 am on January 19. At the time, she was working at a hotel in Soi Hua Hin 88/1. CCTV captured the killer moving around the reception area before approaching her. Wirin had become unwell and was resting behind the reception counter.

Rattikorn appeared to examine the area and check whether she was asleep. He then climbed across the reception counter towards her. At that point, he was carrying a metal bar measuring about 50 centimetres. Police later said he struck Wirin 14 times. Most of the blows were directed at her head. Afterwards, he searched the reception area and stole her belongings.

The stolen property included two mobile phones and Wirin’s black bag. Rattikorn then fled from the hotel. Soon afterwards, Wirin was found behind the reception counter with severe head injuries. Nearby, police recovered the bloodstained metal bar used in the attack. She was rushed to Bangkok Hospital Hua Hin. However, doctors were unable to save her.

Tuesday’s judgment centred heavily on the violence recorded during that attack. Rattikorn admitted the offence during proceedings before Hua Hin Provincial Court. Ordinarily, a confession may be considered when judges examine mitigating circumstances. In this case, the judges refused to reduce the punishment. The court described the offence as exceptionally serious, brutal and shocking.

Furthermore, the judges found that Rattikorn had acted cruelly during the attack. They also found that his conduct displayed no fear of the law. Separately, the court considered the devastating loss inflicted on Wirin’s family. Taken together, those circumstances outweighed any mitigation arising from his admission. The court therefore found no sufficient grounds for mercy.

Rattikorn was sentenced to death.

The decision remains a first-instance judgment. Accordingly, the legal process has not reached its final stage. Rattikorn retains access to Thailand’s appeal process. Wirin’s mother acknowledged that position after attending Tuesday’s ruling with relatives. Even so, she said the sentence delivered justice for her daughter.

Wirin’s mother hears death sentence, then returns home to tell her daughter as appeals remain open

During the hearing, Wirin’s mother heard the circumstances of the killing recounted again. Later, she returned home following the judgment. There, she lit incense to tell her daughter about the court’s decision. The ruling closed the first major judicial stage of a case dating back to January.

The circumstances surrounding Wirin’s final shift added another stark dimension to the prosecution case. Her normal working hours ran from 7 pm until 7 am. During those shifts, she routinely maintained a video call with her boyfriend, Komkrit, 42. On January 19, that connection remained active when Rattikorn entered the hotel.

Consequently, Komkrit effectively witnessed the first moments of the encounter. Wirin had become unwell and was resting behind the reception desk. Through the call, Komkrit saw a man climbing over the counter towards her. In response, he desperately called Wirin’s name through the telephone. He was trying to wake her before the man reached her.

Then the connection suddenly disappeared.

Komkrit repeatedly tried to call his girlfriend again. At about 3.10 am, somebody eventually answered one of the calls. Crucially, nobody spoke. The line remained connected for about seven seconds. It was then cut again.

Boyfriend races to Hua Hin hotel after silent seven-second call but arrives too late after fatal attack

By that point, Komkrit was deeply alarmed. He got onto his motorcycle and raced towards the hotel. However, he arrived too late to stop the attack. Wirin had already suffered the fatal injuries that later formed the centrepiece of the murder prosecution.

Another detail emerged from one of Wirin’s colleagues. A woman named Maprang had originally been scheduled to work that overnight shift. However, Maprang became ill and called in sick. Consequently, Wirin agreed to take her place. That decision put her behind the reception counter during the early hours of January 19.

Meanwhile, the robbery produced only a tiny financial return. Following Rattikorn’s arrest, police said he admitted wanting to steal a mobile telephone. He also said he took only ฿350 in cash from Wirin. Police further reported that he spent ฿50 of that money buying methamphetamine.

As part of the investigation, officers examined whether Rattikorn had taken drugs before the murder. He later claimed that he had not intended to kill Wirin. Instead, he said he merely wanted to render her unconscious. Nevertheless, investigators already possessed CCTV showing the repeated blows to her head.

That footage became decisive during the first phase of the investigation. It showed the attacker moving through the hotel before and after the killing. It also provided police with several distinctive identifying features. The suspect appeared to be a dark-skinned man of average build. Police estimated his height at between 160 and 180 centimetres.

In addition, the CCTV clearly showed his clothing. He wore a black jacket and white trousers. More importantly for investigators, he wore distinctive orange shoes. Police compared those images against civil-registration information. The process quickly produced a name.

Investigators identified Rattikorn Yingyod, 36, originally from Nakhon Ratchasima. Hua Hin Provincial Court then issued an arrest warrant during the evening of January 19. By then, a major search was developing across Hua Hin. Police believed a man wanted for an exceptionally violent murder remained somewhere inside the resort city.

The scale of the operation grew rapidly. Ultimately, more than 100 officers joined the search. Hua Hin Police and Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Police were directly involved. Police Region 7 also joined the operation. In parallel, the Central Investigation Bureau provided support.

Officers additionally coordinated with neighbouring Cha-am. Investigators wanted to prevent the suspect from leaving the wider area. At the same time, evidence increasingly pointed towards Hua Hin’s railway corridor. CCTV helped police reconstruct parts of Rattikorn’s escape route. Clothing believed worn during the killing was also found beneath a bridge.

Discarded clothing leads police towards railway tracks before Rattikorn is found hiding in bushes

That discovery further narrowed the manhunt. Police recovered the clothing as evidence and continued searching near the railway. Meanwhile, additional CCTV footage and investigative information reduced the possible search area. Officers concentrated heavily on the railway tracks and surrounding vegetation.

The hunt continued into January 20.

Then, during the afternoon, officers finally found Rattikorn. He was curled up or sleeping in bushes near the railway tracks. The location was roughly 300 metres from the railway line. Thai Examiner reported his arrest at approximately 3.51 pm. Thus, the intensive search ended little more than 36 hours after Wirin was attacked.

The arrest opened another phase of the case. Initially, Rattikorn gave police confused and contradictory accounts of his movements. He first claimed he had simply been sleeping in the area. Later, he said he had slept beneath a bridge. Investigators, however, identified discrepancies between those statements and evidence already collected.

Police then began examining his history. Their investigation established that Rattikorn had previous criminal offences. Thai Examiner reported earlier offences involving assault and rape. Other contemporary reports described a broader record involving theft, assault, sexual offences and drugs.

Moreover, Rattikorn had reportedly been living rough around Hua Hin before Wirin’s murder. He had been staying in the area for three or four months. Frequently, he slept close to the railway tracks. Reports also said he approached residents asking for food or money.

By January 21, police announced that Rattikorn had confessed to the hotel killing. Investigators nevertheless continued building the forensic case. Officers collected DNA samples from the suspect. They also sought fingerprint comparisons with evidence recovered from the hotel.

In particular, forensic work focused on the weapon and the reception area. The bloodstained metal bar had been recovered close to Wirin. CCTV evidence independently recorded much of the attacker’s movement. Consequently, police said a public reenactment was unnecessary.

There was another reason no reenactment took place. Rattikorn himself refused to participate because he feared vigilante retaliation. Investigators therefore continued the prosecution without staging one.

The case moved into court the following day. On January 22, police brought Rattikorn before Hua Hin Provincial Court for his first detention hearing. Investigators presented four extremely serious charges arising from Wirin’s death.

Four grave murder and robbery charges lead court to refuse bail and send Rattikorn to provincial prison

First, Rattikorn faced premeditated murder. He was also charged with murder involving torture or extreme cruelty. Additionally, investigators accused him of murder committed to facilitate another offence. Finally, he faced robbery causing death.

The court authorised his initial detention for 12 days. No relative sought bail on his behalf. Police opposed any release because of the gravity of the accusations. The potential punishment was also severe. Moreover, the court considered the circumstances of the killing and the danger of flight or further harm.

Accordingly, bail was refused. Rattikorn was transferred to Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Prison. From there, the criminal case moved through the judicial system during the following months.

For Wirin’s family, meanwhile, the case followed a very different course. Komkrit had effectively seen the beginning of the attack through their nightly video connection. He watched a stranger climbing towards his girlfriend behind the reception counter. Moments later, the connection was gone.

He then received the unexplained seven-second call. Afterwards, he raced through Hua Hin on his motorcycle towards the hotel. He arrived after Wirin had been fatally injured. Later, he saw the man police accused of killing her.

Komkrit forgives Rattikorn as murder case moved towards judgment after months of court proceedings

Following Rattikorn’s arrest, Komkrit said he chose to forgive him. He said anger could not return Wirin to him. The criminal process nevertheless continued, eventually bringing Rattikorn back before Hua Hin Provincial Court.

Nearly eight months passed between the murder and Tuesday’s judgment. During that period, the evidence gathered during the January investigation formed the case against him. CCTV showed his movements around the reception area. Police had recovered the suspected murder weapon. Investigators had also traced his flight towards the railway.

Moreover, Rattikorn had confessed after his arrest. He later admitted the offence during court proceedings. That admission created one of the central questions at sentencing. The court had to decide whether the confession justified reducing the punishment.

It decided that it did not.

Instead, judges returned to the way Wirin was killed. She was working the overnight shift after another employee fell ill. She had become unwell herself and was resting behind the counter. Rattikorn entered the hotel and repeatedly moved through the reception area.

He then climbed across the counter while carrying the metal bar. Police said he struck Wirin 14 times. Afterwards, he searched the desk and took her belongings. Those items included two phones and a black bag. Investigators later put the stolen cash at just ฿350.

Judges reject confession as mitigation after reviewing 14 blows, robbery and flight towards railway

Police also said Rattikorn used ฿50 of that money to buy methamphetamine. He then fled towards the railway, where police concentrated their search. More than 100 officers eventually became involved. The following afternoon, officers found him curled up or sleeping among bushes.

Against that background, the judges rejected his request for mitigation through confession. They characterised the killing as exceptionally brutal. They also considered his lack of fear of the law. Above all, the court examined the nature of the attack and its effect on Wirin’s family.

For those reasons, the confession produced no reduction. The judges imposed death.

The judgment also carried an unusual historical distinction for Hua Hin Provincial Court. Amarin TV reported that Tuesday’s ruling was only the court’s second death sentence. The earlier case involved the notorious murder of 13-year-old Kotchakon “Nong Kaem” Pitakjamnong.

That killing occurred aboard overnight train No. 174 in 2014. The train was travelling from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Bangkok. Railway employee Wanchai “Game” Saengkhao was convicted of raping and murdering the girl.

Hua Hin Provincial Court sentenced Wanchai to death on September 30, 2014. Notably, he had also confessed. Yet the court refused to treat that confession as sufficient mitigation. Judges instead focused on the extreme cruelty of the offence.

Hua Hin court’s earlier death sentence in Nong Kaem murder also survived a confession and later appeal

The Appeal Court subsequently upheld Wanchai’s death sentence. Later reports surrounding Rattikorn’s case said that punishment was eventually commuted to life imprisonment.

The two Hua Hin cases therefore share a striking procedural feature. Both defendants admitted extraordinarily serious offences. In each case, the court refused to let the confession reduce the death sentence. Instead, judges gave decisive weight to the manner of the killings.

Tuesday’s hearing, however, remained focused on Wirin’s murder. Her mother attended after waiting almost eight months for the first-instance judgment. She heard the court again describe the attack that killed her daughter. Then she heard judges impose Thailand’s maximum criminal punishment.

Afterwards, Wirin’s mother said she felt justice had been delivered for her daughter. At the same time, she recognised that further proceedings remained possible. The judgment came from the court of first instance. Rattikorn therefore retains the right to pursue an appeal.

The case began before dawn on January 19 with an overnight hotel shift. Wirin had taken the duty because a colleague was sick. She was also maintaining her customary video call with Komkrit. Then Rattikorn entered the reception area.

CCTV recorded him checking the surroundings before moving towards Wirin. He crossed the counter carrying an iron bar. Police said he then struck the receptionist 14 times in the head.

Police retrace brutal robbery and manhunt before Rattikorn returns to court over receptionist murder

After the attack, he took two phones, her black bag and a small amount of money. He then fled towards Hua Hin’s railway district. Behind him, Wirin lay critically injured behind the counter. The murder weapon was recovered nearby.

Within hours, police used CCTV and registration records to identify Rattikorn. The court issued an arrest warrant that evening. Subsequently, more than 100 officers joined a widening search across Hua Hin and nearby areas.

The following afternoon, the hunt ended near the railway tracks. Officers found Rattikorn among bushes in an area familiar to him. He initially supplied conflicting explanations for his movements. By the next day, however, police said he had confessed.

On January 22, he appeared before Hua Hin Provincial Court. Police presented charges including premeditated murder and robbery causing death. Other charges included murder involving extreme cruelty and murder facilitating another offence.

Eight months after bail refusal, Rattikorn admits killing again but confession cannot prevent death

The court refused bail and sent him to Prachuap Khiri Khan Provincial Prison. From there, the case continued for almost eight months.

Then came September 8.

Rattikorn once again admitted responsibility before Hua Hin Provincial Court. This time, however, judges were deciding punishment rather than detention. His confession offered no escape from the maximum penalty.

The court found the attack exceptionally brutal. It found no sufficient grounds for mercy or mitigation. Consequently, Hua Hin Provincial Court sentenced Rattikorn “Sam” Yingyod to death for murdering Wirin “Nui” Thaolipo.
