Umno president Zahid says being optimistic about Najib’s pardon chances tomorrow

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi expressed hope for a favorable outcome as the Pardons Board considers former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's clemency bid.

Zahid emphasized that the decision rests with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, highlighting the constitutional power of pardon.

The Federal Territories Pardons Board is set to review Najib's application, though the outcome remains uncertain.

Najib was convicted for misappropriating RM42 million and is serving a reduced sentence after a partial pardon, with speculations about the possibility of house arrest.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said he was hoping for the best when the Pardons Board considers former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s clemency bid tomorrow.

Zahid reiterated today that the power of the pardon was constitutionally vested in the Yang diPertuan Agong.

“I am confident that His Majesty’s discretion and wisdom will determine the final decision, which is His Majesty’s absolute prerogative to announce,” he told reporters at the Umno general assembly here.

The Federal Territories Pardons Board is expected to discuss Najib’s latest application for tomorrow.

FMT reported that sources familiar with the matter said Najib’s application was expected to be among the issues raised at the board’s meeting, although it remained unclear whether the meeting would result in a decision or merely a discussion.

A separate source told the online news portal that Najib could potentially be allowed to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, although it was unclear whether the option would be considered at the meeting.

Najib, 72, was convicted of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International and sentenced to 12 years in prison, along with a RM210 million fine. He began serving his sentence at Kajang Prison on Aug 23, 2022.

In 2024, the Pardons Board halved his prison term to six years and reduced the fine to RM50 million.

However, Najib and his lawyers subsequently insisted that the partial pardon came with a royal addendum for him to serve out his remaining time at home, eventually suing to have this granted.

On Dec 22 last year, High Court judge Alice Loke dismissed Najib’s application to serve the remainder of his reduced sentence under house arrest. Najib withdrew his appeal against the decision in April this year.

巫统主席拿督斯里艾哈迈德扎希德哈米迪表示，在赦免委员会考虑前首相拿督斯里纳吉的特赦申请时，希望能有一个有利的结果。

扎希德强调，最终决定权在于最高元首，并着重强调了宪法赋予的赦免权。

FMT报道称，知情人士透露，纳吉布的申请预计将成为董事会会议上提出的问题之一，但目前尚不清楚会议是否会做出决定，还是仅仅是进行讨论。

另一消息来源告诉该在线新闻门户网站，纳吉布有可能被允许在家监禁服完剩余刑期，但目前尚不清楚会议上是否会考虑这一选项。

现年72岁的纳吉布因挪用SRC国际公司4200万令吉的资金而被判处12年监禁，并处罚金2.1亿令吉。他于2022年8月23日开始在加影监狱服刑。

2024年，赦免委员会将他的刑期减半至六年，并将罚款减少至5000万令吉。

然而，纳吉布和他的律师随后坚持认为，部分赦免附带一项皇家附加条款，允许他回家服完剩余刑期，最终提起诉讼要求批准该条款。

去年12月22日，高等法院法官艾丽斯·洛克驳回了纳吉布要求以居家监禁方式服完剩余减刑刑期的申请。纳吉布于今年4月撤回了对该裁决的上诉。
