MRT network hits 5th month of high reliability; extends record of no major delays to 10 months

Singapore's MRT network, excluding the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL), recorded its 10th month without a major delay of more than 30 minutes in August.

The monthly rail reliability report published by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) also stated that the overall MRT network’s Mean Kilometres Between Failure (MKBF) exceeded two million train-km for a fifth consecutive month.

All MRT lines’ MKBF remain above one million train-km, including the oldest North-South (NSL) and East-West Line (EWL), said LTA on Friday (Sept 11).

Rail reliability is mainly tracked using a 12-month moving average of the MKBF metric, which counts the average distance a train travels before it meets a delay of over five minutes.

The provisional data shows the overall network's MKBF rose to 2.88 million train-km, up from the 2.37 million train-km in July.

It also shows that all five mature MRT lines — NSL, EWL, North-East Line (NEL), Circle Line (CCL) and the Downtown Line (DTL) — either maintained or improved their 12-month MKBF moving average.

The DTL saw the biggest improvement in its MKBF from the 4.2 million train-km in July to 8.37 million in August. This was followed by the EWL which recorded 2.52 million train-km in its MKBF, up from the 2.02 million in July.

"Our high MKBF levels over the last five months reflect their sustained effort and dedication to uplift reliability and improve their response to faults and incidents," LTA said.

It added that this performance also reflects the impact of the recommendations made by the Rail Reliability Task Force in February this year, which the authority said it is working with train operators SMRT and SBS Transit to implement.

Meanwhile, MKBF for TEL — increased from 373,000 train-km in July to 415,000 train-km in August.

TEL is not included in the overall MRT network's MKBF as it is still undergoing construction and extension, and system integration works are ongoing alongside regular operations and maintenance.

Train service delivery and train punctuality

Two other metrices used by LTA to track rail reliability — train service delivery and train punctuality — also remained high at above 99 per cent in August.

Train service delivery measures the actual distance travelled by trains compared to the scheduled distance, while train punctuality measures the extent to which train trips are completed on time.

Both the NEL and CCL recorded improvements on their train service delivery, while the NSL and DTL saw their performance on this metric drop slightly.

Overall, the MRT network recorded train service delivery of 99.62 per cent in August.

Meanwhile, train punctuality on the overall network dipped slightly from 99.29 per cent in June, to 99.03 per cent in August.

Of the five mature MRT lines, CCL recorded an improvement, while the other four lines saw a dip in performance.

LTA noted that both metrices for the DTL were lower in August owing to planned system integration testing.
