Ex-Singapore Idol judge Ken Lim appeals against conviction for molesting woman in 2021

Former Singapore Idol judge and music producer Ken Lim was convicted by a district court in September 2025 for molesting the woman on Nov 23, 2021.

SINGAPORE - Former Singapore Idol judge and music producer Ken Lim appealed to the High Court on Sept 11 against his conviction and 13-month jail sentence for molesting a 25-year-old woman.

He was convicted by a district court in September 2025 for molesting the woman on Nov 23, 2021 at the office of Hype Records, his music production and artiste management company.

His lawyer, Senior Counsel Tan Chee Meng, argued that it was “totally unsafe for the conviction to hold”, given the “multitude of contradictions” in the woman’s testimony.

He asserted that her testimony was at odds with what she told her then boyfriend and two close friends, and that it was “impossible” for her to be groped in the manner she described.

The senior counsel also took issue with a “missing” segment of CCTV footage of Lim and the woman leaving the office, which he said would have shown that she was behaving normally.

Another of Lim’s lawyers, Samuel Navindran, said the 13-month jail term imposed by the district court was excessive, and that a sentence of about eight months’ jail would be in line with past cases.

Deputy Public Prosecutor James Chew, on the other hand, contended that the woman was completely consistent on the material aspects of what happened at the office and how Lim had molested her.

He argued that the accounts of the boyfriend and two friends were generally consistent with the complainant’s testimony in terms of how she was molested and her demeanour when she confided in them.

The prosecutor said: “The court is not looking for identical accounts. That’s simply not realistic.”

Chew said the defence’s claim of impossibility was “a complete non-starter”.

The CCTV footage issue was inconsequential and a red herring, as the woman’s account that she pretended as if nothing had happened could already be seen in the footage from other CCTV cameras, he said.

Chew said the sentence of 12 months’ jail, with an additional month in lieu of caning, was not manifestly excessive.

Justice Hoo Sheau Peng will give her decision at a later date.

The complainant, who was talent-spotted by Hype Records, met Lim at the office on three occasions between Nov 16, 2021 and Nov 23, 2021. The molestation occurred at the third meeting.

She said at the second meeting on Nov 18, Lim spoke about the traits of being a celebrity, and asked whether she would carry out a certain sex act on a director.

He assured her that this would not actually happen, and the aim was to determine whether she was able to perform under pressure, particularly in scenes requiring her to kiss or carry out certain acts.

Lim also asked whether she would “f*** for a change”, which he claimed was a figure of speech.

They moved on to other topics, and the meeting ended on a positive note, she said.

After the second meeting, Lim sent her messages on Telegram secret chat. One of his messages said, “happy to tie you up, babe” with a kissing or smiling emoji.

When she said she did not appreciate sexual comments, he replied, “no, everything is serious”.

At the third meeting, Lim focused on sacrifice as one of the traits of being a celebrity and asked if she was willing to “f*** for a change”.

She said after initially saying “no”, she eventually said “yes” out of frustration. Lim then sat next to her on the couch, and told her to kiss him, she said.

She said she perceived the demand for a kiss as a test to demonstrate her commitment to sacrifice and her ability to act under pressure.

She said she kissed him but pulled away after a few seconds.

Lim told her to kiss him again, passionately. While they were kissing, he reached under her collar and groped her, she said.

She then told him she had to leave to meet her boyfriend.

She said she was on “autopilot” as they left the office together and went his car at the car park. He drove her to the ground floor, and they parted ways when her Grab ride arrived.

She gave Lim a side-hug before she boarded the car.

The next day, Nov 24, she broke down after her manicure went badly. This led her to disclose what occurred to the boyfriend, and later, her two friends.

On Sept 11, Lim’s lawyers argued that the woman had vacillated on her understanding of whether Lim’s discussions with her were literal demands for sex or figurative questions.

Tan said it was incredible for the woman to accede to the kiss when she maintained that she understood them to be hypothetical questions.

He questioned her decision to go for the third meeting despite the questions at the second meeting and the sexual questions over Telegram.

Tan added that her claim that she did not want to be near Lim after he molested her did not gel with her actions in following him to his car and hugging him.

The prosecutor replied that the woman was excited about the opportunity to break into the entertainment sector, and saw Lim as a reputable person.

“What had happened until then did not cross the line to the point she had to pull the plug,” he said.

The prosecutor added that she gave a clear and reasonable explanation for her seemingly normal behaviour after the incident.

“She explained she was in a state of shock after bring groped. She was not thinking clearly and was operating on ‘autopilot’ mode.

“She tried to keep calm and pretended everything was normal. Her main thought was to get away without alarming him.”

After Lim was sentenced by a district judge in November 2025, the prosecution applied for five remaining charges - relating to allegations of improper behaviour involving three other women - to be withdrawn.

In 2024, Lim was cleared of allegations in a separate trial involving a different woman who accused him of making sexual comments while they were at Hype Records’ premises on July 25, 2012.

2025 年 9 月，他被地方法院判处有罪，罪名是于 2021 年 11 月 23 日在其音乐制作和艺人管理公司 Hype Records 的办公室猥亵该女子。

他的律师陈志明高级律师辩称，鉴于该女子的证词中存在“诸多矛盾”，因此“维持定罪完全不安全”。

他断言，她的证词与她告诉当时的男友和两个好朋友的话相矛盾，而且她不可能以她描述的方式被猥亵。

这位资深律师还对林某和那名女子离开办公室的监控录像中“缺失”的一段提出异议，他说这段录像本可以显示该女子的行为举止很正常。

林某的另一位律师塞缪尔·纳文德兰表示，地方法院判处的 13 个月监禁刑期过重，而 8 个月左右的监禁刑期与以往的案例相符。

另一方面，副检察官詹姆斯·丘则辩称，该女子对办公室发生的事情以及林某如何猥亵她的实质内容，说法完全一致。

他辩称，男友和两个朋友的说法与原告的证词基本一致，包括她如何遭到性骚扰以及她向他们倾诉时的举止。

检察官说：“法庭并不寻求完全相同的证词。这根本不现实。”

周表示，辩方提出的“不可能”的说法“完全站不住脚”。

他说，监控录像的问题无关紧要，而且是个转移视线的伎俩，因为该女子声称自己假装什么都没发生，这一点已经可以从其他监控摄像头的录像中看到。

周先生表示，判处 12 个月监禁，外加一个月监禁代替鞭刑，并不算明显过重。

胡秀萍法官将在稍后日期作出判决。

投诉人是 Hype Records 发掘的艺人，在 2021 年 11 月 16 日至 2021 年 11 月 23 日期间，曾三次在办公室与 Lim 见面。性骚扰事件发生在第三次见面时。

她说，在 11 月 18 日的第二次会议上，林谈到了作为名人的特质，并问她是否会对一位导演进行某种性行为。

他向她保证，这种情况不会真的发生，目的是为了确定她是否能够在压力下表演，尤其是在需要她接吻或进行某些动作的场景中。

林还问她是否愿意“换个方式做爱”，他声称这只是一种比喻。

她说，他们随后讨论了其他话题，会议在积极的气氛中结束。

第二次见面后，林通过Telegram的秘密聊天功能给她发了消息。其中一条消息写道：“宝贝，很乐意把你绑起来”，并附上了一个亲吻或微笑的表情符号。

当她说她不喜欢性暗示的评论时，他回答说：“不，一切都很严肃。”

在第三次会面中，林强调牺牲是成为名人的特质之一，并问她是否愿意“换个方式做爱”。

她说，起初她拒绝了，但最终还是因为无奈而答应了。林随后坐在她旁边的沙发上，让她吻他。

她说，她认为对方要求亲吻是对她的考验，以此来证明她愿意做出牺牲以及在压力下行动的能力。

她说她吻了他，但几秒钟后就推开了他。

林某让她再次热情地吻他。她说，在他们接吻的时候，他把手伸到她的衣领下面，摸了她的身体。

然后她告诉他，她得走了，要去见她的男朋友。

她说，他们一起离开办公室，去停车场取他的车时，她感觉自己像是“自动驾驶”一样。他开车送她到一楼，等她的网约车到了之后，他们就分开了。

上车前，她给了林一个侧抱。

第二天，也就是11月24日，她因为美甲失败而崩溃。这导致她向男友倾诉了事情经过，之后又告诉了她的两个朋友。

9 月 11 日，林某的律师辩称，该女子对林某与她的谈话究竟是字面意义上的性要求还是比喻意义上的问题，一直摇摆不定。

谭表示，这名女子坚持认为他们问的是假设性问题，却最终同意接吻，这令人难以置信。

尽管在第二次会面中她提出了问题，而且在 Telegram 上还被问及了性方面的问题，但他质疑她决定参加第三次会面的决定。

谭女士补充说，林某声称在她遭到林某性骚扰后，她不想靠近他，但这与她跟随林某到他的车旁并拥抱他的行为并不相符。

检察官回应说，该女子对有机会进入娱乐圈感到兴奋，并且认为林是一个信誉良好的人。

他说：“在那之前发生的事情还没有越过底线，让她不得不放弃治疗。”

检察官补充说，事发后，她对自身看似正常的行为给出了清晰合理的解释。

“她解释说，被猥亵后她处于惊恐状态。她当时思维混乱，完全处于‘自动驾驶’模式。

“她努力保持冷静，假装一切正常。她一心只想在不惊动他的情况下逃走。”

2025 年 11 月，林某被地方法官判刑后，检方申请撤销其余五项指控——这些指控涉及另外三名女性的不当行为。

2024 年，林某在另一起审判中被判无罪，该审判涉及另一名女子，她指控林某在 2012 年 7 月 25 日与她在 Hype Records 的住所内时发表了性评论。
