America marks the 25th anniversary of 9/11

This year, a new seventh moment of silence will be held during the NYC commemoration ceremony for the thousands of people who have died from diseases linked to exposure to the toxic ash and rubble of the World Trade Center.

Trump is observing 9/11 anniversary at the Pentagon

President Donald Trump is observing the 25th anniversary of the tragic September 11, 2001 attacks at the Pentagon today and will not be attending the ceremony at the World Trade Center.

Trump’s decision to stay in Washington is partly driven by his desire to deliver remarks, people familiar with his plans said. Politicians have long not been permitted to speak at the New York event.

Trump, who was in New York on the day of the attacks in 2001, attended the 9/11 memorial in New York City in previous years, including in 2016 as the GOP presidential nominee and again in 2024 ahead of his second election.

As sitting president during his first term, he attended and spoke at the commemorative events held at the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

Officials knew air quality after 9/11 was unsafe, previously undisclosed records show

New York City this week released more than 170,000 pages of previously undisclosed records about air quality following the September 11, 2001, attacks, showing city officials at the time knew conditions around ground zero were unsafe to breathe despite repeated assurances to the public.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the release at a news conference Tuesday.

“As the years pass and the human toll grows, we reckon with the cost of September 11th whenever another New Yorker is stolen from us too soon,” Mamdani said. “Now, close to 25 years later, more people have died from 9/11-related illnesses than were killed on the day itself.”

City officials confirmed the records include contamination data gathered by local environmental agencies in the days following the attacks as well as air quality reports and communication between city officials showing there was concern about the air quality and whether the city could be legally liable as a result of the public’s exposure to the toxins.

The documents were among 68 boxes stored in a city government office that were discovered last year, according to city officials.

On Wednesday, unions representing New York firefighters expressed frustration with the information.

Exposure to the dust at the World Trade Center has been tied to heightened risk of cardiovascular disease among firefighters who responded to the scene. Respiratory disease and thousands of cancer diagnoses have also been linked to the toxic pollutants released during the attacks.

“For the FDNY, September 11th did not end on September 11th,” Eustace said.

All living former US presidents, except Trump, will mark 25th anniversary of 9/11 in NYC

All four living former US presidents will attend a ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, in New York City, while President Donald Trump marks the occasion at the Pentagon .

Former President George W. Bush, who was in office when the attacks happened, will attend the ceremony at ground zero alongside former first lady Laura Bush, according to a statement from his presidential center.

Former President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton are scheduled to attend the ceremony in New York as they have several times over the years, people familiar with the matter told CNN. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a senator from New York at the time of the attack, will also be on hand. Former first lady Michelle Obama will also be in attendance.

A spokesperson for former President Joe Biden confirmed that he and former first lady Jill Biden will attend the ceremony as well.
