20 people evacuated, 2 taken to hospital after fire breaks out at Pasir Ris flat

Some 20 people were evacuated from a Pasir Ris HDB block on Sunday (Sept 13) morning after a fire broke out in an eighth-floor unit, that resulted in two persons taken to the hospital.

In response to AsiaOne's queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) stated that the fire, involving a bedroom in the affected unit, happened at about 7.30am at Block 722 Pasir Ris Street 72.

SCDF said its firefighters extinguished the fire using one water jet, adding that three persons from the unit had self-evacuated prior to its arrival.

Police and SCDF officers evacuated about 20 residents from the affected block during firefighting operation as a precautionary measure.

A total of two persons were taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Realtor Zudrya Zamhasbi of Dyra Property shared a video of the incident showing thick smoke billowing from the affected unit.

"It's so strong (smell) that I can't even breathe properly," she said.

According to Zudrya, she heard what sounded like two explosions, adding that firefighters arrived within minutes of her call.

Based on her video, at least three fire appliances attended to the incident.

The video also shows the three units above the affected flat with black soot marks on their exterior facade.

Fire of electrical origin

SCDF told AsiaOne that its preliminary findings indicate that the fire had likely started from an electrical origin in the affected bedroom.

It urged homeowners not to overload electrical outlets with electrical appliances and to always switch off appliances when they are not in use.

The condition of electrical wires should also be regularly checked, with those found frayed or cracked to be replaced or repaired immediately.

In addition, batteries or devices should not be left charging unattended for extended periods, or left charging overnight.

Last year, the SCDF responded to 2,050 fires, with 1,051 cases taking place in residential premises .

Unattended cooking remained the top cause of fires that occur in homes, while 305 cases of fires of electrical origin were recorded.

Dyra Property 的房地产经纪人 Zudrya Zamhasbi 分享了一段事件视频，视频显示受影响的单元冒出滚滚浓烟。

“这气味太浓了，我都喘不过气来，”她说。

据祖德里亚称，她听到了像是两次爆炸的声音，并补充说，消防员在她报警后几分钟内就赶到了。

根据她的视频显示，至少有三辆消防车赶赴现场处理事故。

视频还显示，受影响公寓楼上的三栋房屋外墙上都有黑色的烟灰痕迹。

电气火灾

新加坡民防部队告诉亚洲新闻网，初步调查结果显示，火灾很可能是由受影响卧室的电气故障引起的。

它敦促房主不要在电源插座上放置过多的电器，并在不使用电器时务必将其关闭。

还应定期检查电线的状况，发现磨损或破裂的电线应立即更换或修理。

此外，电池或设备不应长时间无人看管地充电，也不应整夜充电。

去年，新加坡民防部队共处理了 2050 起火灾，其中 1051 起发生在住宅场所。

无人照看的烹饪仍然是家庭火灾的主要原因，同时记录了 305 起电气火灾。
