Worker dies after being struck by hose at Jurong Port Road construction site; MOM investigating

A 35-year-old worker died after being struck by a hose connected to a compressed air pump at a Jurong Port Road construction site; MOM is investigating.

MOM emphasises safety measures for compressed air systems, warning that improper handling can cause serious injuries from hoses whipping or flying projectiles.

This incident follows another recent death nearby; construction accounted for four workplace deaths and 65 major injuries in early 2026, prompting MOM to review safety enforcement for contractors.

SINGAPORE – A 35-year-old worker died after he was struck by a hose connected to a compressed air pump at a construction site in Jurong Port Road on Sept 1 1.

The worker was carrying foundation works at 37 Jurong Port Road at about 8.20pm when he was hit by the hose, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Sept 13.

Checks show that this is the address of port operator Jurong Port’s administrative building.

In response to queries, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to a work-related incident at the location at around 8.30pm.

The worker was pronounced dead at the scene by SCDF paramedics, they said.

The police added that based on preliminary investigations, they do not suspect foul play.

An MOM spokesperson identified Keller Foundations (S E Asia) as the occupier and employer of the worksite.

The spokesperson said the ministry is investigating the incident and has instructed the company to stop all concreting works at the site.

MOM added that as a general safety measure, compressed air systems must be properly isolated and fully depressurised before hoses, tools or fittings are disconnected.

Measures must also be taken to prevent hoses and other pressurised components from moving unexpectedly when connections are released.

Failure to properly secure these systems can result in hoses whipping, flying projectiles and physical injury, the spokesperson said.

This incident comes on the back of another workplace death at a Jurong Port Road construction site in recent months.

On Aug 3, a 23-year-old Bangladeshi worker died after scaffolding collapsed onto a lorry he was in at a construction site at 30 Jurong Port Road.

The man had been struck by a formwork structure that fell from the fifth storey of a building under construction while it was being repositioned. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to MOM’s mid-year Workplace Safety and Health Report released on Sept 8, there were 21 workplace deaths and 314 major injuries in the first half of 2026.

Of these, the construction industry accounted for four deaths and 65 incidents of major injuries .

The most common cause of major injuries is slips, trips and falls, followed by vehicular incidents, machinery incidents and falls from height.

Smaller-scale construction works accounted for 70 per cent of the sector’s injuries and fatalities.

MOM had said that it is reviewing measures to strengthen deterrence and accountability among such contractors.

人力部 (MOM) 于 9 月 13 日表示，一名工人在裕廊港路 37 号进行地基工程时，于晚上 8 点 20 分左右被水管击中。

经核实，这是裕廊港运营商行政大楼的地址。

针对询问，警方和新加坡民防部队（SCDF）表示，他们于晚上 8 点 30 分左右接到报警，称该地点发生了一起与工作有关的事故。

据称，新加坡民防部队医护人员在现场宣布该工人死亡。

8月3日，一名23岁的孟加拉国工人在裕廊港路30号的建筑工地，因脚手架倒塌砸中他乘坐的卡车而丧生。

这名男子被从在建建筑五楼坠落的模板结构击中，当时该模板结构正在被重新定位。他当场被宣布死亡。

根据人力部9月8日发布的年中工作场所安全与健康报告，2026年上半年共有21起工作场所死亡事故和314起重大伤害事故。

其中，建筑业造成 4 人死亡，65 人重伤。

造成重大伤害的最常见原因是滑倒、绊倒和跌倒，其次是车辆事故、机械事故和高处坠落。

小型建筑工程造成的伤亡事故占该行业总伤亡事故的 70%。

人力部曾表示，正在审查相关措施，以加强对这类承包商的威慑和问责。
