Malaysia, Thailand strengthen energy ties with new joint development area agreements, says Akmal Nasrullah

Malaysia and Thailand signed a new Production Sharing Contract and Gas Sales Agreement for Block A-18-01 to strengthen energy cooperation in the Joint Development Area.

The agreements aim to enhance investor confidence and support energy security, with natural gas projected to make up 56 per cent of Malaysia's primary energy supply by 2050.

The deals are expected to pave the way for future development and investment, further unlocking the potential of the Joint Development Area for both nations' benefit.

BANGKOK, Sept 14 — Malaysia and Thailand today strengthened their energy partnership with the signing of a new Production Sharing Contract (PSC) and Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) for Block A-18-01 in the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (MTJDA).

Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, who is on a two-day working visit to Thailand, said the agreements, signed in conjunction with Gastech 2026 here, would ensure continuity in the development of the block while reinforcing investor confidence and supporting the energy security of both countries.

Akmal said the move came at an important time as natural gas continued to play a major role in Malaysia’s energy system and socioeconomic growth, with the fuel projected to account for 56 per cent of the country’s total primary energy supply (TPES) by 2050.

“The priority is to ensure that energy resource development continues to attract investment and is supported by industry capabilities that can create sustained value.

“Certainty, continuity and confidence are essential to unlock investment, sustain production and secure long-term value,” he said in a statement on Monday.

The Block A-18-01 PSC was entered into by Malaysia-Thailand Joint Authority (MTJA), PC JDA Limited and PTTEP JDX, while the GSA also involves Petronas and PTT Public Company Limited.

Akmal said the progress achieved through Block A-18-01 provided a strong foundation for the continued development of the MTJDA, which represents nearly five decades of cooperation between Malaysia and Thailand.

He said the momentum from the latest agreements should pave the way for the next phase, involving the development of a new PSC and GSA for Block B-17-01.

“The momentum created today should pave the way for the next phase of developing a new PSC and GSA for Block B-17-01, as we continue to unlock the full potential of MTJDA for the benefit of both nations,” he said.

Akmal also said Malaysia looked to industry partners and contractors to bring the capital, technology, expertise and long-term commitment needed to develop the resource in a commercially viable and responsible manner.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Thai Energy Minister Akanat Promphan and Akmal witnessed the signing ceremony.

Meanwhile, Akanat described the MTJDA as a successful model of bilateral cooperation built on trust and shared interests, saying the new agreements marked another important phase in Malaysia-Thailand energy cooperation.

正在泰国进行为期两天工作访问的经济部长阿克马尔·纳斯鲁拉·莫哈末·纳西尔表示，这些协议是在2026年泰国天然气技术展（Gastech 2026）期间签署的，将确保该区块开发的连续性，同时增强投资者信心，并支持两国的能源安全。

A-18-01区块的生产分成合同由马来西亚-泰国联合管理局（MTJA）、PC JDA有限公司和PTTEP JDX签订，而总销售协议还涉及马来西亚国家石油公司（Petronas）和泰国国家石油公司（PTT Public Company Limited）。

阿克马尔表示，A-18-01区块取得的进展为MTJDA的持续发展奠定了坚实的基础，这代表了马来西亚和泰国近五十年的合作。

他表示，最新协议带来的势头应该为下一阶段铺平道路，下一阶段将涉及为 B-17-01 区块制定新的产品分成合同 (PSC) 和总供应协议 (GSA)。

泰国总理阿努廷·查恩维拉库尔、泰国能源部长阿卡纳·普罗姆潘和阿克马尔见证了签字仪式。
