New Lawas Hospital expected to evolve into specialist centre to cut long‑distance referrals, says deputy health minister

The new 76-bed Lawas Hospital aims to become a specialist facility, reducing local reliance on distant hospitals.

Currently understaffed due to manpower constraints, the hospital expects improvement with the hiring of additional personnel, including permanent specialists.

Built at the cost of RM183 million, the hospital began construction in June 2020 and is seen as essential due to Lawas' geographical location.

LAWAS, Sept 14 — The new 76-bed Lawas Hospital is expected to evolve into a specialist hospital, thereby reducing the local population’s reliance on distant hospitals.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib stated that current manpower constraints have resulted in incomplete staffing at the hospital, a situation that will improve once additional personnel are secured.

“I hope that God willing, medical specialists will be permanently based at Lawas Hospital, rather than relying on scheduled visiting specialists.

“It has been difficult for the people to access specialist care, as they previously had to be sent to distant hospitals. I hope this facility will become a specialist hospital,” she said at the Lawas Hospital project handover ceremony here today.

The new hospital is equipped with, among other facilities, two operating theatres, a patient kitchen, an ICT lab enabling remote consultations with medical specialists, nine haemodialysis machines, and 76 beds, including four beds in the High Dependency Ward.

Hanifah noted that geographical factors make comprehensive health facilities in Lawas crucial; previously, patients requiring specialist referrals had to travel approximately one and a half hours to Limbang and about three and a half hours to Miri via certain routes.

Meanwhile, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, who also attended the ceremony, stated that the RM183 million Lawas Hospital project was built by the Public Works Department’s Special Project Team 2 starting June 30, 2020, using a Design and Build method undertaken by MCS Management Sdn Bhd.

He expressed hope that the hospital would improve community access to quality healthcare services and serve as a catalyst for enhancing the quality of healthcare service delivery in Lawas. — Bernama

卫生部副部长拿督哈尼法·哈贾尔·泰布表示，目前人手不足导致医院人员配备不全，一旦获得更多人员，这种情况就会得到改善。

“我希望，如果上帝保佑，医疗专家能够常驻拉瓦斯医院，而不是依赖于定期来访的专家。”

“过去，人们很难获得专科医疗服务，因为他们以前不得不被送到很远的医院。我希望这家医院能够发展成为一家专科医院，”她今天在拉瓦斯医院项目交接仪式上说道。

新医院配备了诸多设施，包括两间手术室、一间病人厨房、一间可与医学专家进行远程会诊的ICT实验室、九台血液透析机和76张床位，其中包括重症监护病房的四张床位。

哈尼法指出，地理因素使得拉瓦斯的综合医疗设施至关重要；以前，需要专科转诊的患者必须通过某些路线前往林梦，大约需要一个半小时，前往美里，大约需要三个半小时。

与此同时，工程部长拿督斯里亚历山大·南塔·林吉也出席了仪式，他表示，耗资 1.83 亿令吉的拉瓦斯医院项目由公共工程部特别项目组 2 于 2020 年 6 月 30 日开始建造，采用设计建造方法，由 MCS Management Sdn Bhd 公司承建。
