Penang Port Commission, PPSB to offer free ferry services on Malaysia Day

The Penang Port Commission and Penang Port Sdn Bhd are offering free ferry services on September 16 for Malaysia Day and the Keretapi Sarong Festival.

The offer covers trips from both ferry terminals in Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim and Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda, saving commuters RM2 to RM2.50 per trip.

This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and promote sustainable public transport, following last year's use by over 10,000 pedestrians and 1,900 two-wheeled vehicles.

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 14 — The Penang Port Commission (SPPP) and Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) are offering free ferry services to Malaysians on September 16 in conjunction with Malaysia Day celebrations and the Keretapi Sarong Festival.

SPPP chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the offer applies to trips from both ferry terminals, Pangkalan Sultan Abdul Halim (PSAH) in Seberang Perai and Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda (PRTU) here, in accordance with the existing service schedule.

“With this free ferry service offer, I hope to alleviate the financial burden on Malaysians while providing an opportunity to celebrate Malaysia Day and participate in the Keretapi Sarong Festival in a meaningful way,” he said in a statement today.

He noted that commuters would enjoy savings of RM2 per one-way trip for pedestrians and RM2.50 for two-wheeled vehicle users.

According to him, during last year’s Malaysia Day celebration, a total of 10,094 pedestrians and 1,909 two-wheeled vehicles utilised the ferry service for round trips.

Yeoh added that these figures contributed to the overall annual total of 3,131,131 pedestrians and 784,065 two-wheeled vehicles recorded in 2025.

He said the initiative also aims to help reduce traffic congestion in Penang, in addition to encouraging the use of more sustainable and efficient public transportation. — Bernama
