Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in the Maldives for a two-day official visit aimed at strengthening Malaysia-Maldives relations, which began in 1968.

Upon arrival, Anwar was warmly welcomed by Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and other officials, underscoring the close ties between both nations.

During the visit, Anwar is scheduled for meetings and bilateral talks, with potential agreements in defense and Islamic affairs.

This visit follows Anwar's participation in the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi and a stop in Kerala.

The Maldives is a key economic partner for Malaysia in South Asia.

MALE, Sept 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim arrived in the Maldives tonight to begin a two-day official visit aimed at further strengthening Malaysia-Maldives bilateral ties, which dates back to 1968.

The special aircraft carrying Anwar landed at Velana International Airport here at 8.12 pm local time (11.12 pm Malaysian time) with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu personally welcoming the Prime Minister.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, was accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan and a Malaysian delegation.

Also present to welcome the Prime Minister were the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Badli Hisham Adam, Maldivian Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, who was the minister-in-attendance, as well as senior officials from both countries.

The warm welcome reflected the close and cordial ties between the two leaders and their countries.

Upon arrival, Anwar received a guard of honour and, before proceeding to the Official Jetty, was treated to a cultural performance by school students to mark his arrival in the island republic.

Muizzu then accompanied Anwar to the Official Jetty to complete the welcome ceremony at the start of his maiden official visit to the Maldives.

Tomorrow, Anwar’s programme is scheduled to begin with an official welcome ceremony at Republic Square in Malé, followed by a four-eye meeting with Muizzu and bilateral talks involving delegations from both countries.

The two leaders are also scheduled to witness the exchange of memorandum of understanding (MoUs) in areas of defence and Islamic affairs.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to receive courtesy calls from several Maldivian ministers before attending an official luncheon hosted by Muizzu.

The Maldives is Anwar’s final destination after attending the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Friday, followed by a visit to Keralam, the new name for Kerala, before flying to the island republic.

Maldives is one of Malaysia’s important economic partners in South Asia and was Malaysia’s sixth-largest trading partner in the region in 2025, with total bilateral trade valued at RM792 million.

马来西亚总理拿督斯里安华·易卜拉欣抵达马尔代夫，展开为期两天的正式访问，旨在加强马来西亚与马尔代夫自1968年以来建立的关系。

安瓦尔抵达时受到马尔代夫总统穆罕默德·穆伊祖博士和其他官员的热烈欢迎，凸显了两国之间的紧密联系。

访问期间，安瓦尔将出席会晤和双边会谈，并可能在国防和伊斯兰事务方面达成协议。

此次访问之前，安瓦尔参加了在新德里举行的第十八届金砖国家峰会，并访问了喀拉拉邦。

马尔代夫是马来西亚在南亚的重要经济伙伴。

兼任财政部长的安瓦尔由投资、贸易及工业部长拿督斯里佐哈里阿都加尼、人力资源部长拿督斯里拉马南和马来西亚代表团陪同。
