Tower Transit looking to thank those who helped unresponsive bus driver in Hougang

Tower Transit seeks to thank four commuters who helped an unresponsive bus driver safely stop his bus in Hougang on Sept 14.

A SBS Transit driver quickly alerted the control centre, while passengers checked on the driver, called an ambulance, and engaged the handbrake.

The bus driver is in stable condition at the hospital; the community praised the teamwork and caring spirit shown during the incident.

SINGAPORE - Tower Transit is looking for the four commuters who rushed to help a bus driver on Sept 14, after he became unresponsive behind the wheel while approaching a bus stop in Hougang.

In a Facebook post on Sept 15, the bus operator highlighted the “caring commuter culture” shown in the incident and said “we’d love the chance to thank you properly”.

It also expressed its appreciation to an SBS Transit bus driver who had quickly alerted the Tower Transit control centre to the medical emergency.

Tower Transit said that a man at a bus stop had noticed a bus driver on service 854 slumped in the cabin on the afternoon of Sept 14 and banged on the doors to sound the alert.

Passengers on board the double-decker bus also rushed to help, it added.

“One checked on our captain, another called for an ambulance and a third climbed into the driver’s seat to engage the handbrake and bring the bus safely to a stop,” it said.

The man who had stopped the bus also explained the situation to the Tower Transit control centre, it added.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that it received a call for assistance in Hougang Avenue 3 at about 1.30pm on Sept 14.

A person was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, it added.

Tower Transit said the bus captain is in hospital in a stable condition and all passengers were on board the bus were safe.

“We are in touch with his loved ones and checking in on him regularly,” a spokesperson said, in response to queries.

“Our only concern is that he has a full and speedy recovery, and the best thing for him right now is to rest and let the doctors care for him.”

The spokesperson added that staff will be visiting the bus driver on Sept 16, together with members of the National Transport Workers’ Union.

Tower Transit said in its post: “To the vigilant commuter at the bus stop, the quick-thinking passengers, and the helpful SBS Transit Ltd bus captain, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. If this was you, please DM us or call our hotline.”

Several Facebook users said they were heartened by the actions of the commuters and SBS Transit driver, with some also wishing the Tower Transit driver a speedy recovery.

Said Jimmy Lian Nanshun: “The beauty of public transport lies in the teamwork between commuters, transport workers and different PTOs (public transport operators). Though they may wear different uniforms, I believe all share one purpose, keeping Singapore moving safely and smoothly.”

User Mohd Elias hailed “The Hougang Spirit”, while another user, Oh Leng Kiong, added: “Situations like this show how important it is to look out for one another. Hope the bus captain is recovering well.”

9 月 15 日，这家公交车运营商在 Facebook 上发帖，强调了此次事件中展现的“关爱乘客的文化”，并表示“我们很想有机会好好感谢大家”。

该公司还对一位迅速将医疗紧急情况通知Tower Transit控制中心的SBS Transit巴士司机表示感谢。

Tower Transit 表示，9 月 14 日下午，一名男子在公交车站发现 854 路公交车的司机瘫倒在驾驶室里，于是敲打车门发出警报。

报道称，双层巴士上的乘客也纷纷上前帮忙。

声明中说：“一人查看了我们的司机情况，另一人打电话叫了救护车，第三人爬到驾驶座上拉起手刹，安全地把公交车停了下来。”

报道称，拦下公交车的男子还向塔楼交通控制中心解释了情况。

新加坡民防部队表示，9月14日下午1点30分左右，他们接到后港3道的求助电话。

声明还补充说，其中一人已被送往陈笃生医院。

Tower Transit公司表示，公交车司机目前在医院情况稳定，车上所有乘客均安全。

发言人回应询问时表示：“我们与他的亲人保持联系，并定期了解他的情况。”

“我们唯一关心的是他能否完全康复，尽快痊愈。现在对他来说最好的事情就是休息，让医生照顾他。”

发言人补充说，工作人员将于9月16日与全国运输工人联合会的成员一起探望这位公交车司机。

Tower Transit在帖子中写道：“衷心感谢在公交车站保持警惕的通勤者、反应迅速的乘客以及热心的SBS Transit Ltd公交车司机。如果您就是其中之一，请私信我们或拨打我们的热线电话。”

一些 Facebook 用户表示，他们对通勤者和 SBS Transit 司机的行为感到鼓舞，还有一些人祝愿 Tower Transit 司机早日康复。

连南顺表示：“公共交通的魅力在于乘客、交通运输工作人员和不同公共交通运营商之间的团队合作。虽然他们可能穿着不同的制服，但我相信他们都拥有一个共同的目标，那就是确保新加坡的交通安全顺畅。”

用户 Mohd Elias 称赞了“后港精神”，另一位用户 Oh Leng Kiong 补充道：“这样的事情表明了互相照应的重要性。希望巴士司机早日康复。”
