A diner has raised concerns after allegedly finding a dark, mud-like substance around the joints of crab claws in a bowl of crab rice vermicelli at a restaurant.

The diner claimed that staff at Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab initially described the substance as dirt before later identifying it as seafood paste used in the soup base, according to an anonymous post in the Complaint Singapore Facebook (FB) group on Sunday (Sept 13).

According to the same post , the restaurant said its chef had inspected the crab and determined that the residue was homemade seafood sauce that had accumulated around the crab shells and joints during cooking.

'They gave us different excuses'

The restaurant then offered a "full 1-to-1 replacement", according to the post.

After about 20 minutes, the diner said a manager showed them seafood paste used in the soup and claimed it was the substance found on the crab, which the diner disputed because the colours did not match.

"We wasted so much time sitting there while they went back and forth and gave us different excuses," the diner said, describing the explanation as "ridiculous" and the customer service as "extremely disappointing".

Restaurant's version

In response to AsiaOne's query, the restaurant said the residue was "localised around one joint" and that its appearance "darkens during the cooking process" as the seafood paste collects around the crab's shell and joints.

It also clarified that the "after" photo circulating online "was not taken at our restaurant or by our team" but was taken after the pincer had been returned to the diner.

The restaurant said the original "before" photo was taken by its team before the chef examined the pincer and was later provided to the diner at his request.

The restaurant said neither diner contacted it directly after leaving before the matter was raised publicly later that night, adding that its team "remained available to address" any further questions or concerns.

In the comments section of the FB post, the diner questioned why the restaurant had removed all the residue from the crab claw instead of keeping a sample for further examination, saying the claw had been “completely brushed clean”.

The diner said that left them unable to obtain an independent or third-party opinion on what the substance was.

餐厅版本
