WHAT comes to mind when you think of a pharmacist? For many, it is someone behind a counter dispensing medicine.
But for Ng Kar Weng, his career tells a different story. One that spans hospital wards, pharmaceutical boardrooms and research laboratories across three continents.
His journey reflects how much the profession has changed beyond community pharmacy and hospital practice.
Today, pharmacists contribute across specialised clinical services and the pharmaceutical industry, including medical affairs, regulatory affairs, market access, research and digital healthcare.
Taylor’s University's Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) programme, under the School of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, prepares students for this evolving profession, pairing technical competencies with transferable skills.
Classroom knowledge with professional practice
Following his grandfather’s battle with colorectal cancer, Ng’s curiosity about how medicines work in the body drew him to pharmacy.
He chose Taylor's University for its emphasis on experiential learning and broad exposure across different fields of pharmacy, which helped him understand the profession from multiple perspectives.
During his undergraduate years, he gained experience in community pharmacy, tertiary hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry before securing an internship with a leading multinational pharmaceutical company through the university’s industry partnerships.
Beyond academics, Ng embraced leadership opportunities through the institution’s Student Council, Taylor’s University Pharmacy Students’ Society and the Malaysian Pharmacy Students' Association.
He also presented research at the Asean PharmNET Conference, experiences that complemented his academic journey and culminated in him receiving the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society–CCM Gold Medal in 2017 as Taylor's Outstanding Pharmacy Student.
After graduation, he went on to earn a prestigious international scholarship for postgraduate studies before continuing his academic journey through a fully funded PhD scholarship at a leading Australian university.
Curiosity beyond graduation
Ng credits inspiring mentors, meaningful research opportunities and experiential learning, encouraging him to keep challenging himself beyond graduation.
His postgraduate research has contributed to efforts to optimise treatment for vulnerable patient populations.
"Clinical practice taught me how to improve care for one patient at a time, while research showed me the potential to improve care for thousands more," he said.
Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) programme director Assoc Prof Dr Jason Loo believes that while the university provides an environment rich with opportunities, students play an equally important role by staying adaptable, open-minded and willing to make the most of every experience available to them.
Dr Loo advises every graduate to take advantage of every experience available to them, both inside and outside the classroom, and invest in their own growth during university.
“A solid technical foundation will always matter for a profession such as pharmacy, but adaptability and an open mind will define the best pharmacists of the next generation,” he said.
Looking back, Ng describes his journey at Taylor’s University in three words: curiosity, perseverance and purpose.
Those qualities continue to guide his career today and reflect the mindset he believes will enable future pharmacists to make meaningful contributions across healthcare, research and the pharmaceutical industry.

但对于吴家荣来说，他的职业生涯却讲述了一个截然不同的故事。他的经历横跨三大洲，从医院病房、制药公司董事会到研究实验室，无所不包。
他的经历反映了药学行业在社区药房和医院药房之外发生了多大的变化。
如今，药剂师在专业临床服务和制药行业中发挥着重要作用，包括医学事务、监管事务、市场准入、研究和数字医疗。
泰莱大学药学院（隶属于健康与医学科学学院）的药学学士（荣誉）课程，旨在为学生进入这个不断发展的行业做好准备，将技术能力与可迁移技能相结合。
课堂知识与专业实践相结合
在祖父与结直肠癌抗争之后，吴先生对药物在体内如何发挥作用产生了好奇，这促使他投身于药剂学。
他选择泰莱大学是因为该校注重体验式学习和广泛接触药学不同领域，这帮助他从多个角度了解这个行业。
在本科学习期间，他先后在社区药房、三级医院和制药行业积累了经验，之后通过大学的行业合作关系，在一家领先的跨国制药公司获得了实习机会。
除了学术方面，吴同学还积极参与学校学生会、泰莱大学药学院学生协会和马来西亚药学院学生协会等组织的领导活动。
他还参加了东盟药学网络会议并发表了研究成果，这些经历丰富了他的学术历程，并最终使他在 2017 年荣获马来西亚药学会-CCM 金奖，成为泰莱大学杰出药学学生。
毕业后，他获得了一项享有盛誉的国际奖学金，继续攻读研究生学位，之后又在澳大利亚一所顶尖大学获得了全额资助的博士学位，继续他的学术之旅。
毕业后的好奇心
Ng 将自己能够不断挑战自我归功于鼓舞人心的导师、有意义的研究机会和体验式学习，这些都激励着他在毕业后继续努力。
他的研究生研究为优化弱势患者群体的治疗做出了贡献。
“临床实践教会了我如何一次改善一位患者的护理，而研究则让我看到了改善成千上万患者护理的潜力，”他说。
药学学士（荣誉）课程主任 Jason Loo 副教授认为，虽然大学提供了一个充满机会的环境，但学生也发挥着同样重要的作用，他们要保持适应性、开放的心态，并愿意充分利用他们所能获得的每一个机会。
卢博士建议每位毕业生充分利用课堂内外的一切机会，并在大学期间投资于自身的成长。
“扎实的技术基础对于药剂师这样的职业来说固然重要，但适应能力和开放的心态将决定下一代优秀药剂师的素质，”他说。
回顾往事，吴先生用三个词来形容他在泰莱大学的求学之路：好奇心、毅力和目标感。
这些品质至今仍在指导他的职业生涯，并体现了他认为能够使未来的药剂师在医疗保健、研究和制药行业做出有意义贡献的心态。
对于考虑从事药剂师职业的学生，该课程提供高级制药行业实践和化妆品科学等专业方向，并辅以相应的专业认证。学生还可以受益于制药行业学生合作项目（PISA），该项目将他们与领先的医疗保健机构和制药行业联系起来，并加强他们接触实际工作的机会。
